Get the petrol, its more refined.

With the vehicles listed above, at 10,000 miles a year the saving on fuel is minimal.

I'd say it's close these days.

Don't believe the self proclaimed experts on here, as you're finding out they have pre-conceived ideas.
Go stick those figures in your petrol tank.

We're dealing in generalisations here. By the sounds of things you're the exception to the rule, but if you want to argue with any 'self proclaimed experts' you should perhaps tell us the model (and importantly, age (DPF?)) of your car.

FYI, we have a 61 plate SEAT Altea DSG 1.6 TDI (with DPF) and only does circa 10k a year - wifes car, only short journeys, many of which are just a couple of miles between her clients houses - from home to her area of work is about 7 miles on 50 to 60 mph roads, the rest is town at 20 to 40.

DPF light has never come on in the almost three years we have had the car.

I have however bought one of the ODBII scanning tools that communicate with an app on android phone - can look at the soot levels on that, just not got around to it yet.

On my other car, another VW engine - 2.0 CR TDI, its 86,000 miles and the residual soot levels appear to be at about 20% so that means that its at 4/5ths of its original capacity - so not bad I think for a 6 year old car with that mileage - although mostly motorway since I have had it.
