petrol or diesel
Hi
Thinking of getting a 2nd hand car about 12-16 reg, seen a Vauxall Astra gtc 2.0 which is diesel and then the corsa's which are petrol, heard something about diesel being hit with some new tax or something but unsure if this car?
these are the 3 cars.
thanks

'new diesel tax' is speculation only at the moment.
How many miles do you do in a year?
Do you do a lot of short (>10 miles) journeys?
Diesels are, and always have been, only suitable for mile munchers and/or towing.0 -
I would say about 10,000 a year0
-
10,000 a year, my commute to work is 9ish miles each way0
-
In that case diesel would be the worst choice. Go for petrol.0
-
But the OP's commute only accounts for half their annual mileage-so they are presumably doing some longer weekend/holiday trips as well.
10K miles p.a. is on the cusp, so a diesel might well be a better option. The 'diesel tax' is only going to affect those driving in central London in the immediate future, and even then only the older and dirtier diesels.
Not sure why you are looking at a Corsa and an Astra though? One is a supermini, the other a hatchback. Totally different classes. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Commute may be 9 miles but no details on what this is like.
If anything like my occasional car commute, which is about 9 miles, it can take 45 minutes to an hour.
I also notice the Astra has only done 22,000 in three years, 7k a year in a diesel could mean lots of issues ready to reveal themselves.
Go petrol.0 -
I've owned both petrol and diesel for serious mile munching. We're talking upwards of 25k miles a year.
For your 10k a year, I wouldn't be going near a diesel, especially a new one. Fuel costs more and proper diesel efficiency comes with long trips. Shorter trips were no more efficient than my petrol in reality.
Plus, DPFs etc. Stick with your trusty petrol.0 -
Thanks, and sorry the commute is about 45mins to 1hr due to stop start traffic.0
