So sound works, but that uses the thin audio cable. How abour you have the ide port wrongly cabled, or drive wrongly jumpered orfaulty cabled?
The little sound cable that used to connect from the back of the CD drive to the main board hasn't been a feature of most boards for the best part of the late 15 years or so and under XP or later isn't used anyway.
Sound comes digitally down the IDE/SATA cable. For older versions of Windows prior to XP it would have been needed as they didn't support digital audio extraction, but as anything prior to XP is pretty much obsolete, it's not a factor these days.0 -
Neil Jones, he did say the latest drivers were dated 2006:)
Wonder if x64 vlc version would have work any better in this case?
Since the sound is now working, if there's still problems after AndyPix's fix, you could download this, and run as admin http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Images-Utils/Rizone-CD-DVD-Repair.shtml
Also have you tried the difference between a cd and a dvd, as they use 2 different types of lasers in the drive? Former being ir and the other is red.0
