After the creators update my DVD drive has issues. It can play an audio CD using windows media player but not using the VLC media player (it just lists .cda files). Software discs are not 'seen' if I try to open disc in a new window, it just throws up a pop up telling me to put a disc in, whilst ejecting the disc that is in! I think the drive is a Samsung Super Writer speed plus. It is shown in device manager as
TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-222BB SCSI CdRom Device
This may be a driver issue but searching for an updated driver from device manager tells me it is up to date. It is dated June 2006 provided by Microsoft. I've looked for more recent drivers but I don't know which of the many many site to trust. Please can anyone help?

From VLC choose Media > Open Disk, not Open File0

I have updated VLC to latest version and used open disc but it can still only see the .cda files. (In this PC the DVD RW Drive (D)does change to audio disc) and windows media player can play the audio tracks. A commercial DVD is not recognised. Nothing changes in the This PC window and windows media player reports no disc.
I would still like to find an updated driver but can't find what I would regard as a safe source. Again any opinions on a safe source of driver updates would be appreciated.0 -
I realise I'll be shot down by some but Driver Booster may solve your problem as it has with me on several occasions but run a scan after installing with Malwarebytes http://filehippo.com/download_driver-booster-free/You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Thanks for the idea - I have tried this, avoiding all the extra offers that came with the install, but although it found a number of outdated drivers the one for the DVD drive it states is up to date. I'm begining to think that it is a hardware failure or that the Creators update has fundamentally broken something - I'm looking at usb drives as a replacement.0 -

Buy a cheap one and be prepared for a possible failure. W10 broke my Dell laptop's ability to write DVDs and Dell wasn't able to fix the problem. I bought a USB external drive to replace it and that didn't work either.
I'm now using an old machine whenever I need to make backup discs or copies.0 -

I've been looking at options but the really cheap ones don't specify W10 compatibility. The frustration is I only want it to uninstall some paid for software to move to a new computer. (The uninstall requires the original disc to be in the drive).0 -

You've probably already thought of this but you could copy it to a USB stick then transfer that to a machine that still writes DVDs.
I'm spitting nails about the things W10 broke and which Dell washed its hands of.0 -
Try the following:
Right-click the Start button > Command Prompt (Admin)
Then, at the command prompt type the following ( you can copy and paste) and press "Enter":
reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
Restart the computer.0 -
Also, by any chance do you have something called "Toshiba recovery media creator" installed ?0

Your suggestions are some of the very few I would follow having no idea of what the commands would do!
(I don't have the Toshiba software installed)0
