HOW MUCH?!?!? for a kitchen?

I'm currently having a major extension built and pricing up for a completely new kitchen and am shocked at the price.

I've tried Wren, B&Q and a local firm and they are all coming out at 15k!!!

The last time I did a kitchen it was a smaller one but it was only 2k.

I know I do want drawers, pull outs etc which are more expensive but 15k seems unbelieveable for a fairly basic shaker style kitchen with peninsula. It does include appliances but not the American fridge freezer.

I'm going to email DIY kitchens and see if they can quote as their website doesn;t seem to have the units I want (can;t find a corner larder cupboard with pullouts on there) but does anyone have a ny other suggestions?

The prices do include installation too but still...

You can get kitchens at low price price off Ebay as peeps with more money than sense rip out kitchens to stay up with fashion

    This for £3,200

Does your builder have recommendations? When we had our last extension our builder suggested a couple of local places to us which were trade places where his account would be used to obtain discount, and he fitted it. We had a lady come out to plan it, ordered the kitchen (approx £3k) and as it was the builder's frequently used place they had an existing working relationship meaning that when inevitably there were one or two alterations when it came to actually installing, they just swapped items in and out where necessary. (builder had itemised £2k on his initial quote to fit the kitchen from memory)

This was a large open plan area where the kitchen took up about 12' square so not small, appliances I bought from Currys, but therefore total cost would have been IRO £6k

Definitely go to Trade counters. I remember going to the Magnet showroom and prices were totally ridiculous, reflecting the glossy brochures. Trade counter literally round the back of the same building - cost was in line with what we paid from another supplier in the end. You're right - don't be a mug!!

If they're all coming out about the same figure then I can't say it's unreasonable, especially with installation. If you've spec'd everything with a fancy space saving unit, then it will slowly bump up the price, add on some quartz or granite worktops which can easily be 3-4k+

Surely you have a breakdown of the quotes to see where it's getting expensive? What are they charging for installation?

At that price, you might as well brick the door up - stop using it - and eat out for the rest of your life :)

My kitchen is costing considerably more than this, but the cabinets are only a small fraction of the cost, about 20% of the total.

The question is how much work needs to be done? Rip out all electrics, upgrade the fuse box (there are a number of more modern terms for this), redo plumbing, plastering, new ceiling and lots of work to the floor before laying the new vinyl etc. Appliances easily £3,500 for mid-range.

Skips and disposal costs also need to be included.

What work are you having done? It's the labour that costs the money, especially electrics as you need certificates.

If all you are doing is updating the cabinets and appliances it will be much cheaper.

Whatever you do don't go for Wren. You'll regret it.
You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Sounds reasonable if you had more than the average number of units and an island.

However, the kitchen does walk to your house and fit itself! :rotfl:

Labour is required, and people need to earn a living, and I find that the labour costs are often higher than the materials.

How do you like you new kitchen now that you've had it a while? Is there anything you wish you had included that you didn't?
