Bill Shock after moving from EON Smart Meter to Scottishpower (Unit type wrong) ?

A friend of mine has been with EON with a smart meter and has recently moved to Scottishpower (without a smart meter - her existing one stopped functioning).

The final read with EON was 3780 and the new bill with Scottishpower shows 3780 and an estimated read of 3940 for the billing period.

Having checked the smart meter display today to get a reading (as they are no longer displayed on the actual meters) it gives a gas reading of 05115. After advising this to Scottishpower they have now come back and recalculated the bill from £40 (which is about right) to around £500.

The reading on the meter of 05115 shows kWh, but I don't believe previous gas readings are in kWh as the bills convert it from the meter reading to a kWh measurement?

Am I right in thinking it is just the wrong unit of measurement being used ?

Any help appreciated.

The readings on the gas meter itself would have been in cubic feet - the supplier a conversion factor of about 11.2

You shpuld read the meter itself - not the In House Display

Gas is measured (and sold by) volume so cubic metres . It is converted to kWh for billing purposes.
So your friend and you need to find the correct reading on the gas smart meter for the volume of gas used and submit that to SP. Search online for a manual for the specific smart gas meter or look on the E.ON site for help.
(The in house display does not necessarily show gas by volume if it is still working at all)

Oh, ok - The screen on the main meters are completely blank - I assumed it was all controlled by the in house display.

The In house display shows a usage reading but that it is kWh for gas.

I'll look up about taking a reading from the main meters.

    Thank you!

Scot Powers demand for £500 makes no sense, even if they have mixed the meter type

The smart meter fitted by Eon is almost certainly a 'Metric' model where each meter unit delivers close to 11.2 KWh of Gas - So meter use of 160 converts to appx 1792 Kwh - Say 1792 x 2.5p = £44.80 which will be plus the Daily Standing Charge and VAT

If an error has been made by Scot Power by charging the meter units as though it was an Imperial Meter which delivers close to 31.5 KWh per meter unit, the say charge would still be only 5040 KWh x 2.5p = £126.00 plus Daily Standing Charge and VAT - To create a bill of £500 the meter would have to have recorded a useage reading approaching 20,000 units

The heart of the problem seems to be the KWh used display on the remote reader, being taken by SP as meter units used, and whilst I don't hold SP in high regard, they can only work on the figures the customer gives them

Good luck in convincing SP that the meter reading given to them was wrong !

If it's a Secure meter then you have to press button 9 on the keypad to get the meter reading in cubic meters (it will be something like 001234.5). I believe you only need to give a five digit reading so you ignore the first 0 and decimal place.

I know E.ON did used to fit a different make of smart meter, which didn't have a keypad, instead it just had two buttons. Pressing one (or possibly either) of these would turn the screen on.

The E.on meter I have is an Elster and has a single black button between two arrows.

Pressing the button livens up the screen.

The meters with a key pad where you press 9 are a pain.

I managed to do it a few weeks ago!

    Only took 2 calls!

First accepted it was wrong, sent a photo of meter (I always photo my reads), then read the meter read even wronger(tm). 10000 out instead of 1000 out!

Still is is a dial meter.

Rang back next day and got a sane person who did not even want to see the pics as it followed my useage!

Hello darren72 and already some great advice on here. To confirm, although your friend is no longer supplied by us, the smart meter we installed will still be recording usage like any other meter. It's just that it won't be working as a smart meter by automatically sending readings to the new supplier. It will need to be read manually. As others have said, take the readings from the meter itself. Don't rely on the In House Display we fitted with the meter. Readings on the meter will be in cubic metres.

    Hope this helps.

That's right dogshome. The gas smart meters we've installed are the metric ones.
