I despair of this talk of saving for childcare when the OP and his girlfriend aren't even expecting yet! And as far as we are aware they aren't even trying yet!

    I'm thinking troll now...
And he has low sperm count....

They can live together. It's really, really not difficult to do. I'm just amazed so many seem to be making a huge deal about it.

I'm finding it strange that despite being repeatedly called a troll by certain posters, among a few other things, as well as being told it would be better for everyone if I was run over by a bus -which is actually disgusting behaviour- some people can't help using social media to try and kick people down. Posting "I'm out" then keeping this conversation going when I haven't even posted for days.

Yes I know I've been over thinking things and I'm happy to be told that but being criticised for things like saving for childcare just because I don't have children yet? What relevance is that, and what's the suggestion, that I should just blow every spare penny and then wonder how I'm going to pay for children if/when they happen?

Thank you to all of the posters who have voiced constructive thoughts, opinions and advice, is very much appreciated

Nobody, for one minute, is suggesting you blow every penny....but for the love of all that is holy, live a little.

Without sounding mean people think that you are a troll because

    A) your situation sounds unbelievable - what kind of peoples has £40,000 savings, a girlfriend of 11 years, since they were 24- but lives with their parents. That situation seems quite nonsensical. And

    B) you haven't listened to anything sensible anyone has said.

Knocking down people's suggestions is easier than moving out, isn't it?

When you do this, you hurt yourself (and your gf and parents), not the rest of us.

What does your girlfriend want to do?

    Dare to do something.

If you are geuine OP, then please start living your life instead of waiting for it to start.

I am pretty boring and unadventurous but by 35, I'd lived in 3 cities/towns, bought 3 houses, had 2 children , 2 major bereavements, several pets, 2 employers, 5 promotions and a few health issues as well as always partly looking after a widowed mum.

I've survived - most of us do. You are stagnating if what you say is all true and the longer you do that, the harder it will be. Life is precious, time to start living it before it runs out on you.

I know its been repeated but find a place to rent and see if the 2 of you can actually live together. You could if you wanted too find a 1 or 2 bedroom and make a statememt to your gf.
