If you could get an awesome deal just by making a phone call then it would encourage everyone to do it. By having another brand that you can switch to, they can have another go at trying to keep you as a customer.

No I told them I was going to Talk Talk.

Then I would lose my number.

With EE I got to keep my number.

    Who told you that?

    You were misinformed.

There is always a risk you lose your number if you move, but the idea is to keep it of course!

Talk Talk told me that I would have to have a new number as BT do not allow them to transfer the number over.

    Why would they do that?

I even asked the rep on here and they just told me to go on twitter or register with Talk Talk Community to get help.

If I could of kept the number why did they not tell me I could?

Anyway, transferring to EE was easy and I got a good deal and cashback touch wood everything has been fine.

You probably spoke to an untrained agent, or misunderstood

see this guide to moving from bt to them

Can I keep my phone number?

Yes you can. Although a new telephone line will be installed, you can keep your old number.
(Though you may have had a lucky escape!)

I don't know, but they don't seem to have come to any form of agreement whether they can or not.

From an outsider it seems that BT refuse to give over the phone number if the wrong process is followed, but don't explain to the new provider what is wrong. Then the employees at the new company see that BT always refuse, because they always do it wrong & don't know how to do it right. BT obviously hope that you'll just cancel the switch and stay to keep your phone number.

I've never been unbundled as the LLU providers have always appeared to be dodgier than BT.

    Plusnet being the obvious alternative,
You are aware that Plusnet is a BT company

I think if you want your number, the new company has to pay BT the line termination fee (called something else).

The new company doesn't want to pay this significant fee, so con you into a new phone number.

We went from BT to Sky (with broadband from O2 to Sky)and still have the same number, having since moved to PlusNet.

You will lose the number if you have a cease without migration or move to cable .
