We have a sloping kitchen ceiling (pitched roof?)

We would like to level it off by raising one side to create a flat roof.

The size of the room that has this roof is 5m x 2.7m

Any idea how much this may cost? eg 3k, 10k or more?

I should explain why we are considering this.....
This is the kitchen, and the ceiling slopes downwards towards the garden.
The kitchen is through the wall to dining room and we plan to knock 2 rooms together.

The wall where the hob and sink are both on is 5m long and we plan to install sliding/bifold doors around 3.5m length.
Above the sink currently is 1 velux.
We think the simplest thing is to remove the walls/install doors and 2 or 3 velux.
However hubby thinks it would look sooo much better if the roof didnt slope down at the end.

Leaving aside the cost you first have to ask why do it? Any Architect, or Building Regulations inspector will tell you flat roofs are a potential nightmare and unsuited to the British climate. Poor workmanship. ongoing maintenance, and short life spans all go with this.

I would agree with Furts on this, a pitched tiled/slated roof will last a lifetime, a flat roof i would give no more than 20 years at best before needing redone, any serious leakage during that timespan could cost a small fortune. House builders are always looking to cut costs but one thing they do not compromise on is putting flat roofs on houses due to the huge potential issues with them.

Pitched roofs are much better, and your insurance company may not like your new flat roof, causing your premiums to rise.

Is there a reason why you want a flat roof?

    Hmm, why indeed.

Stick a couple of Velux in if you want more light.

I have to agree. Every year when I shop around for house insurance, pretty much every company asks the question "Does your house have any flat roofs ? ". They're a liability, and a potentially costly one at that.

We spent thousands getting rid of our flat roofed extension, giving it a pitched roof instead. It was still sound, but it did nothing for the appearance of the property.

I therefore can't imagine why anyone would do the reverse of what we did, probably reducing the value of the house in the process.
