Bought a car from a dealer - It is FUBAR'd after a week :-(
^Angry Face!
Bought a car for Mrs. Twon, a Jeep Cherokee. It came with 11 months MOT
and it came with a '2* warranty' (FWIW)
I've just had a call from the garage, the brakes failed and I've got a bill for £330 + VAT.
That I can handle
The sucker punch is that they took it for a testdrive and found a gearbox problem
*No oil in gearbox.
*Drive chain rubbed through case.
*Burnt Prop Shaft.
*bust back bearing.
*rear end has been bodged together.
The garage has said I should contact the dealer and ask for him to give me my money back for the car AND get them to pay and collect the jeep.
I agree with the garage.
I think the Dealer is going to stick two fingers up
I'm hoping that the fact I paid by Credit Card for the car may mean I can request a charge-back.
What do people recommend?
The 2* warranty is only valid for 3 months and I don't have the money to pay for all the work and then chase the warranty company up.

It's not been serviced and they haven't even bothered giving it a Pre Delivery Inspection (PDI). The timing chain rubbing through the case means it is WELL knackered and needs changing IMMEDIATELY before it jumps a tooth and shafts the engine.
Also, if the dealership happens to be the same garage that put the MOT on, threaten to report them to VOSA. When they give you your money back, walk off and still report them to VOSA.0 -

Sorry, I should have been clearer...
Its not a dealer like 'VW/Ford' but a 2nd hand car trader who is an actual trader, not someone selling cars from their house.
Thanks,

Some of them still do MOTs. Sadly, quite a few of those that don't tend to have an "arrangement" with a testing station. An MOT, in short, isn't worth the paper it's written on.0

The warranty is with a seperate company and they posted us the confirmation at weekend (arrived saturday).
I'm not 100% sure what it covers, but the garage that has done the work has said that there is no-way the chain could have rubbed through the gearbox while I've owned the car.

I'd have thought the Sale of Goods Act would be more useful - clearly the vehicle wasn't as described or of satisfactory quality... read this from Honest John's FAQ's (link added to Motoring A-Z).0

Just quote the Sale Of Goods act to the garage in question...0

whats the name? most list policy details online so we can check what is and isnt covered.
in the meantime i would contact the garage with all the faults listed.
they may put their hands up and just give a refund
a lot of small dealers source cars at auction etc and give them a cursory check before selling on.
sometimes its easy money other times they take a hit0 -

My worry is this paragraph.honest_john_website wrote:And if you buy a cheap car (under £2,000) on retail terms from a trader, you cannot reasonably expect it to be perfect.
I dont expect the car to be perfect, but I do expect it not to be f'cked.
