Guest bed

Moving home soon and need a portable bed for the spare room for the occasional guest. Room will normally be used as a study and then bed put up for guest, and then stored probably in garage.

Was thinking of a simple piece of memory foam, size of a small double to just sit on the floor, seemed the simplest thing to do. But storage might be cumbersome.

So was thinking also of a small double folding bed - have seen a few online for around £200. Are these reasonable for majority of the time 1 person to use and for between 2-7 nights, probably a few times a year? Are these sturdy? Good value? Was thinking a small double would be nice and roomy for 1.

Anyone been down this route and have a good recommendation? Any options I mightn't have thought about? It needs to be able to be easily moved to garage when not in use.

Thanks.

Unless your garage is heated, you might not want anyone you like sleeping on a mattress after 6 months in storage.

how about a pull down bed, something like this

plenty of different styles and layouts aviliable elsewhere

    How about single sofabed?

    Would you have enough room?

By the way, I used to have a cheap airbed with a memory foam topper on top. It is OK for couple of days.

    HI Martinsurrey

Thanks for the suggestion, but no, that wouldn't be suitable as the study needs to be a study (it is often used) so nothing cluttering it up. It's a lovely room so want it to stay that way when no guests staying.

Yes I understand your query about the garage. In fact, I have a very large heated storage room where it could go. But also, if needs must and it goes in the garage, then I plan to get a sealable 'bag', which I've successfully used in the past, no mould that way.

The fold up that I was thinking of is called the JAY-BE Venus small double, though there are other alternatives. It has good reviews in general online so wondering if that might be a good choice, folds up compact also.

    Thanks

Murphy type bed might be a good option, or a z bed type thing but don't store it in the garage

Cisco, thanks for that suggestion. Have looked at those and many other sofabeds but they are all horribly uncomfortable unless you go to the top end. Also, most of the sofabeds I've seen are not that attractive in my opinion. Also you are stuck with the sofa bed in the room (I have already decided on furnishings for the study).

Yes I have also used an airbed, and will have that available if needed, but I think for more than a night or two it is not that comfortable, also many people find them chilly with I think cool air coming up from the floor. I've solved that by putting down thick duvets undr the airbed. But then the comfort element is difficult to solve. That's why I thought a 'proper' type fold up bed might be a good compromise.

@maisie - Z bed that's the term I was looking for when I mentioned folding.

    Thanks anyway

I think you're going to struggle - if you want comfortable, that normally means a bigger, better quality base which equals weight, making it difficult to move.

If you're study has space, you could go for something like the Ikea Hemnes day bed - it is pretty comfortable, it can be set up as single or double bed and doubles as a sofa when not in use. But you'll need space in the study as it's too large to go moving it around.

We slept on an airbed for 3 months between house moves so 2-7 nights is perfectly possible. Is warmer if you put a duvet on top of the airbed under the sheet.

Thanks, that certainly seems a possibility as it seems to cover all the things I need. And easy to store too.

Can you tell me, is the base and the mattress section all in one piece? It appears from the photos that you just deflate the mattress and fold the base to store. Also do you find it comfy and stable?

The other option which seems to fit the bill somewhat is:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Beds-Frames-Bases/JAY-Venus-Double-Folding-Density-Airflow-Mattress/B00AF6YS0M/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1494419514&sr=1-1&keywords=small+double+bed+folding

So, at least I have two options to further research.

    Thanks.
