The entitledto calculator would have told you if entitled to anything including council tax.0

The answer is of course no, as above could you not work even part time whilst preparing for your MA ?
Whilst trying to better yourself is great expecting others (tax payers) to finance your choice really isn't on.0 -

Again, please read what I have said, I am not trying to claim any benefits. However as I tried to save money using this moneysavingexpert site while in paid employment I'm just trying to do the same in my current situation. As not working is new to me I'm asking a question in the forum.
The original question was, would there be any reason to register as unemployed if I am not currently seeking work? NI Credits & Council Tax have kindly been dealt with.
The other area I thought might be a source of moneysaving was discounts from retailers for the unemployed. I am currently unemployed so I wondered if I could benefit from this without claiming JSA & if so how? This clearly isn't expecting others to finance my choice.0 -
I'm not sure that you would be able to claim for any discounts from retailers without being able to prove your unemployed status.0

Sorry, I can't think of anything that you might be entitled to, but good luck with your Masters.0

I really don't see how (eg) checking whether the OP is liable to pay the full rate of Council Tax whilst not earning is 'expecting others (tax payers) to finance [their] choice'. Please re-read the purpose of this board - the OP has been quite upfront about the fact that they are simply checking their entitlements, not trying to bend benefits policy in any way.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
I don't have to pay council tax because I'm a full-time student, however my partner does so combined we pay 75% as he gets single person discount.
Hope that makes sense.People don't know what they want until you show them.0 -
I can't think of any retailers that offer discounts for the unemployed. I've had discounts for being a student, but never for being on JSA or ESA. Is there a particular retailer you had in mind? If so, could you contact them and ask them what evidence they'd need for the discount?
It was actually a local community theatre that offers over a 50% discount for the unemployed that made me think me wonder whether other places do the same & whether it might apply to me.
Good suggestion though, I'll ring & ask them!0 -
