That meal plan looks amazing FoxFace!

I'm pleased to report in that no additional spends have been incurred since my last shop.

The mushroom mac and cheese went down really well!:j
I also used up a pancake mix from this years pancake day (I know, hides face!) and made spinach and cheese pancakes for lunch today which turned out to be surprisingly tasty :)
Used up the rest of the giant bag of spinach I ordered last week, and this is really good result for me, as this has always been likely to end up going slimy previously and end up being thrown away.

So some good progress made this last week :A

The little one is likely to make an appearance later this week, so I won't be doing a food shop or posting until that's happened.

Sending positive thoughts to everyone keeping within their budgets for the second week of the month.

    Hi all,

Had a mooch in £stretcher yesterday, and they had 4 cans of tuna for £1! Bonus, so got 8. Also got a few other bits, plus some sausages in Sains for dinner as not enough time to defrost some. Weekly shop done today, less than £30. Will update later when I have the proper totals. Three shops left to do this month, and only about half of the money left...

    Plans for this week:
Sun sausage casserole (made double yesterday)
    Mon pizza
    Tues chicken 'roast'
    Weds soup
Then, Thurs to Sat is just me so I'll eat whatever's in, to try and use up the random stuff...!!

Dinner tonight is the beef stew that I have in the slow cooker that smells blooming delish ... Had late lunch so it's a bit later dinner tonight :(
Got some ginger cake that I made yesterday for afters just can't decide between ice cream or custard .. I don't think you can have both can you lol

i popped into lidles yesterday... serious hankering for a bacon sarnie... to find they had my dad's favourite muesli on special this weekend :D after checking the dates I bought him 6 bags of it! that should keep him quiet for the best part of a year.
I shopped on weds I think last week, but it was such a massive shop that I don't think i'll need anything other than veg and sarnie stuff this week. actually i'm hoping to not have to buy meat for the rest of the month, but I think some pork chops and sausages might fall in the trolley at some point
have a good idea of the meals i'm going to cook for the rest of the month but as we all know sometimes you REALLY don't want what's planned and I like a few quick to defrost things to hand. i'm a terrible one that if faced with a meal I don't want i'll pick at it and then snack the rest of the evening and I try to avoid this as much as possible.
on a side note, I bought a yellow sticker pork hock (not ham) a while ago and have cooked it in the pressure cooker. I stripped the meat and re-froze it, but now i'm wondering what to do with it. I thought pie but I don't much like pastry, so I wondered if it would be good cooked into a slow-cooked 'baked' bean type dish? with lots of paprika. thanks in advance.

Florence I also find what people count as personal spends vs grocery spends fascinating! I suggested to Mr Expert yesterday that our snacking habit should come out of spends not groceries and he looked at me like I'd gone mad. Our general rule of thumb is that anything bought for the household is grocery budget, so cleaning products, Friday night snacks to share, etc., but that if he wants a chocolate bar at work he pays for that out of his personal spends. Food which is meal food is always groceries even if only one of us likes it, because if I'm eating spicy lentil soup I'm not eating the household's stash of sausages or whatever, and he needs more instant options for lunches than I do because I work from home but we both pay for the occasional bought lunch or coffee out of personal spends. I think a lot of this comes from whether you have mutual expectations or very different standards. If Mr Expert insisted on eating scotch fillet or lobster every night, I would change the arrangement quick smart!
Fairly similar here except, because I don't eat snacks or sweets at all, DH buys his own. I do buy my own dark chocolate occasionally though.

I have noticed though that now he has to pay he shops around and uses the discount stores a lot more than when he used to just throw them in the general grocery trolley :rotfl:

Spends this weekend totalled £63.48. I do have quite a few meals in though and have decided to try to use up some of the odds and sods in the freezer. I also want to run down my stock cupboard a bit, though I did buy 300 tea-bags on offer yesterday :o

Hope you all have a money-saving Monday

  • Is it okay to ask for suggestions in this thread or should I go elsewhere? We did a big pork roast yesterday and I still have quite a lot of pork (on the bone), some corn, left over roast potatoes and carrots. Normally I'd make that lot into pasties, but I'm a bit sick of them. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe a spicy cuban stew with tomato and paprika and lime juice, because it's freezing over here, but any other suggestions gratefully welcomed.

This way I get to put off the quiche that was on the meal plan until my chickens pick up the pace a bit, they're slacking.

    Happy wet Monday everyone!

I have spent a bit since the start of my month (31st May - 29th June) but have bought enough catfood pouches to cover the month, just have to get dried food for them. I include this in my grocery budget, along with food, basic toiletries like shower gel and toothpaste, and cleaning stuff. I don't include booze as I try to get this when on offer.

The occasional treat of sandwiches and coffee or a meal out or takeaways comes out of my personal spending along with cosmetics and clothes.

    Happy June everyone :)

Spent £30.64 so far but not done a "proper" shop yet. Included in this is a dash to the corner shop , an asda shop for camping supplies for me & DH and supplies for the hungry teen who stayed home. We did bring some food home with us and bought oven pizzas on way home so we didn't order pizza :j

Off to Aldi tonight for the 1st real shop of the month. Have a rough meal plan and list.
