    If a hotel already has ten empty rooms before I cancel mine then it doesn't matter if they can re-rent mine or not, their 'losses' are no greater.

    I see what you mean. I think it's their 'potential losses' that matters. So you have to imagine that there aren't 10 other rooms in this analogy.

    What matters is that they are following the regulators requirements (they are as this is not full contract price although still pretty steep imo) and that the early termination fee is mentioned somewhere in the contract which I don't doubt for one moment.
