They had to pay a fee for you using your CC to pay, they are perfectly entitled to retain that fee in the case of a refund.0

I am pretty confident that refunds do not carry a fee if done on the same cards that was originally charged.
Not sure about the original fee. I would speak to the credit card company that could investigate what fee were actually paid and what was refunded.0 -
Based on what? Google suggests refunds are typically chargeable. But again, it will depend on the contract the merchant has with their provider.Marchitiello wrote: »I am pretty confident that refunds do not carry a fee if done on the same cards that was originally charged.
The OP's credit card company has no involvement here and can't possibly say what fees the merchant may have been charged.Marchitiello wrote: »Not sure about the original fee. I would speak to the credit card company that could investigate what fee were actually paid and what was refunded.0 -
Consulted in retail for a long while and full refunds were considered as a cancellation of the original transaction (large retailers) and both the original fee was refunded and there was no fee for the refund.
The op merchant can enquire with the charging bank on the op behalf why the refund did not cover the full amount paid.0 -
Btw , WorldPay, one of the largest processor, on their webpage clearly state that refunds do not get charged. A fee but the original transaction fee will not be returned...0

Are you sure? What happens if only part of the amount is disputed? That's not possible, a chargeback is always the full amount of the transaction.
I admit to being out of date with current practice as I am now retired, but in my experience the fee should be adjusted (refunded) to the merchant in case of refund. In fact, that is one of the reasons why credit payments should be refunded back to the credit card.Marchitiello wrote: »I am pretty confident that refunds do not carry a fee if done on the same cards that was originally charged.

Another thing that is not right here is why the rental company actually debited the card with the deposit and then refunded rather than just take an authorisation only for the deposit. This is really not good practice.0 -
He didn't make a point of stating to us that he doesn't do trip advisor...funny that!0

Barclaycard charge for refunds and they're one of the larger providers:Marchitiello wrote: »Consulted in retail for a long while and full refunds were considered as a cancellation of the original transaction (large retailers) and both the original fee was refunded and there was no fee for the refund.

Large retailers will be able to negotiate better rates than a smaller business that handles a relatively small number of transactions. The OP may well have been overcharged here but proving that will be difficult as only the merchant can confirm either way and it isn't in their interests to be helpful.0 -

My fees aren't refunded, but there's no charge to process the refund.
IMO they shouldn't be charging twice, as 2% is about right for costs, where 4% probably isn't.💙💛 💔0
