2% security deposit refund

Options
Hey guys

I paid a security deposit for a campervan of £250, + a 2% charge because it was on a credit card = £255.

I was then refunded £245.

When I asked why there was a discrepancy I was told it is due to a 2% refund charge as it was a credit card.

This cannot be right??

Some might say you should be happy to have got the vast majority of your deposit back given that the dealer could have been within their rights to retain some or all of it. A tenner seems like a pretty small price to pay.

The security deposit was actually an excess, in case there was any damage to the vehicle, in which there was none.

I was told that if return as given I would receive the full deposit back.

The full refund would have been £250 the fee is just that - a charge because you chose to pay by a credit card.
Whether you decide to chase them for a fiver is up to you.

There are other ways to make your point for example write a truthful account on tripadvisor?

    No it is not right.
Go for a chargeback value £10.
Reason: I paid a deposit of £255 and only got £245 refunded. I attach paperwork showing that my deposit should be refunded in full.

I disagree you paid £250 plus an advertised fee for using the card that you had a free choice.
Had you paid by say a debit card you could have been refunded £250 with no fees taken.

That's not possible, a chargeback is always the full amount of the transaction.

Assuming the merchant actually incurred a 2% fee for the payment and another for the refund and notified you of both fees in advance they haven't done anything wrong.

Aren't merchant credit card fees refunded when processing a refund?

It depends on the contract between the merchant and their merchant services provider, they may or may not get some of the original fee refunded.
