What is your reasoning ?
I've no strong feelings on getting rid of the thanks - as far as I can make out it's a pretty subtle feature that you can easily ignore if you want to.
However, I'd love to get rid of (or at least be able to switch off) the ridiculous smilies that completely obliterate some people's posts - in my view they make the forum look like a kiddies chat room rather than a place for sensible financial discussions.0 -
I don't see the point of it and I'm not really sure what its use is.
As far as I can make out one of its uses seems to be so 'gangs' can thank each others posts and intimidate others. It's also the cause of upset if god forbid someone forgets to thank a post that the poster thinks they were entitled to thanks for.
Re the similes, in a sensible financial discussion yes they are out of place but there are lots of other boards on here where their use is acceptable.0 -
The thanks button is very useful on the Competitions board, it enables us to track which competitions we've entered so that we don't enter the same one twice, which may mean we would be disqualified. One of our posters has 28,000,000 thanks.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Competition Time, Site Feedback and Marriage, Relationships and Families boards. Get rid of it it's being misused to harass people remove it from all non spending related boards it has no positive use there.0

Having the Thanks button is an excellent idea. If it were removed we would have many posts repeating the same stuff, rather than just having one post thanked many times.0

It is good to be able to thank a person who has contributed some fact that I did not know.
would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

There's definitely no 'a' in 'definitely'.0 -
The 'Thanks' button is ridiculously overused on the 'Old Style' board, where someone starts a new thread each day with 'Good morning', and thirty or forty people thank him/her.0

It removes the need for "I agree" posts.
I like the thanks button, and use it where I think appropriate.
If you don't like it, don't use it, but leave it for those that do like it.Zebras rock0 -
I think the
button should stay.
The alternative is to create a post consisting simply of the word "Thanks" in a separate post.
But I think we should be clear that the present set-up means that the currentbutton is being used for a variety of purposes - simply because the current selection of buttons is insufficient.
As others have said, it is being used to (effectively) say "I agree", it is being used to keep track of competition entries, it is being used to keep track of last post read in a thread, and possibly other uses.
I would therefore like to propose the creation of additional buttons, so that thebutton can return to its intended use.

I think it would be a good idea to trial getting rid of it, perhaps on the non money-saving boards, simply because, as has been pointed out, it's being misused. I've seen someone pour abuse on someone else, and their post then get thanked by others, so it has like a "yeah, me too" sort of function.
Either that, or keep the thanks button and introduce a thumbs up/thumbs down as well, if that's what users want.0
