Key Stage 2 SATs Results

Hi - My son re-sat his KS2 SATs tests in May this year. He first took them in May of last year and didn't do very well. However, with home tutoring he progressed so well that he was offered the chance to re-sit them.
Can I get the results to these tests? NO! I have been trying, without success, via his school, but no-one seems to know the results. He was 1 of 30 children who re-sat these tests - and no results have been given to the children.
Does anyone out there know who I can contact (other than the school - lost patience) to obtain these results? I guess the SATs have some form of governing body or something of the sort - but I really don't know where to go from here. PLEASE HELP!

our school takes the ks2 sats in year 6 , when my daughter sat her ks1 sats in yr 2 got to know the basic outcome but no didnt see the results , didnt think you could see them, might ask at our school now just out of curiosity if they let you see them or if its a national thing that no parents sees the actual test results, just the basic outcome

Not from personal experience as my kids too young, but definately from friends kids and neice our local school lets you know SATs results of your child. The results from Year 6 decide which stream you are put into for maths and science( I think) when going up to secondary school. Thought that would be the case nationwide (obviously not). There are members on here who are teachers so sure someone will advise you.

See no point taking tests again. They are aimed at certain age groups, with a years extra teaching majority of children would improve levels. His new school will be aware of his ability levels by using their professional judgement. That is why teacher assements are also used, and why many high school do not steam till year 8 or later.
if i had known then what i know now

As a primary teacher, I have never heard of SATs being retaken. They are issued nationwide and should be sat by children at roughly the same time. What may have happened is that the school may have prepared the children by issuing 'mock' SATs and then let you know how they did. One school I worked at did this (I didn't agree with this as it whipped both children and parents into a frenzy. In fact, I don't agree with SATs at all but that's another story!)
You can appeal if you think the child's grade is unfair, but this is generally with the teacher assessment taken into account. You shouldn't have a problem finding out his results - his high school will certainly have them, they are not confidential and you are entitled to see them.
Please post to let me know how you go with this as I am interested to know!

An extra thought I had after reading your post again - how old was your son when he took them the first time? Was he in Y6? Has his high school made him resit them for some reason? A good many schools make every year group take SATs but they are only used 'officially' at Y2 & Y6.

They are issued by the QCA, who do have a website.

the SATS were introduced to assess the schools not the children
so they should all be taken at same age to assess teachers ability
I personally don't think any children should be coached or even necesarily told they are sitting a SATS test as that gives a false assessment of the school

  • Depending on when the child's birthday is there is a range of about a year among the children who take the test.  They all may take the test at the same time.
I think allowance is made for this range in age in the marking scheme as it also was in the 11 plus exams.

In the 11+ I think the boys were given some extra marks  because at that age girls were more advanced than boys. ;)

i don't know about downgrading marks for older children but i know my sons marks were raised because of him only being 6 when he took his year 2 SATS. our school uses optional sats every year to assess how the children are progressing. they write their month of birth on the paper. i don't think the results are given to parents though, unless they ask or unless there appears to be a problem. teachers know if there are problems anyhow, i don't think the SATS mean anything to anyone.

i was recently told my son's results for the end of year 3 as we were having a review (he's statemented for special needs). nobody else had been given their childs grades because they are only end of year tests and are only really for the benefit of the school. they're not secret, you'll be told them if you ask.
