Email Input Field MaxLength Too Low

When signing up using the energy club, part of the form is to confirm my email address.

My email address for this site is 55 characters long, however the input field is only 50. I have to put in the same email address else it won't let me complete the forum.

I managed to get around this by adjusting the length attribute of the form input field using chromes built-in developer mode, however most people wouldn't think of doing this.

Please pass this on to your web development team.

  • HI lazynooblet,

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with Cheap Energy Club!

We've been told by the techies that there's a 254 character limit in the email address field, so we're not too sure why it's not accepting your email address.

So that we could look into this further for you, could you drop us an email to energyclub@moneysavingexpert.com?

    Thanks,
    MSE Laura (Energy Club)

Laura, can you ask the web team to also ensure that the site's email address fields can accept GMail addresses in this format as well?

    name+suffix@gmail.com

This is perfectly acceptable to GMail and I'm sure it's also defined in the RFCs for email address formatting (can't remember which number it is, but it has to be there otherwise no email system could handle it).

    Hi there

I'm not quite sure where you're going wrong here - our site does allow you to enter pluses within your email address as per the example you've given above.

We've got 100s of users who've registered this way as we're aware of this option :)

It seems to be a problem at some of the sites MSE partners with for offers - some of the comparison sites, energy suppliers, etc., have websites that can't cope with them properly, which goes against the best practice guidance and the RFCs.
