Will probably be out by the end of the week. If you put a mobile number on the application you'll get text when it has been processed

Thank you all, slightly less worried now. Wish I had asked the question on here before we sent it off though! It has been a very difficult few weeks losing his mum and I could have done without the added worry of not being able to travel because of the chance of not being able to travel without renewing or going to the wire with the renewal. Will keep you posted.

Going to Croatia, was advised it depends what side of bed the officials get out of so best to renew!
    Who gave you this advice??

For future reference, check https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/croatia/entry-requirements (replace croatia with any other country you're going to) to check passport requirements and other useful info.

Some countries do ask for 6 months validity over and above your stay, and there you can be refused entry if your passport doesn't have 6 months left, but not EU countries. Not yet anyway!

I went to Croatia last year with 3 weeks left on my passport.

Mine took 8 days from uploading the pic and filling in the form - that was on a Sunday. I sent the old passport special delivery on the Monday and got the new passport exactly a week later.

As others say, there was no need to renew. But you'll be fine, I'm sure.

and sadly, in your case, because you are now stressed out, you could have renewed months ago.- up to 6 months before expiry date.
The extra months are added onto the 10 years. I even gained an extra week!

    hope it turns up soon

Latest update is that the old passport arrived there when it was supposed to and is in the processing queue. The tracking info is quite helpful, and feeling a bit more confident about getting the new one back in good time.

yes, you're right- I'd forgotten. I knew it was longer than I'd thought, and I certainly gained one whole week! (haven't worked out how much money I saved!!) It was going to expire mid holiday.
