30 person queue this morning at Barclays and one cashier. No one using the automatic machines.

This just sums up Great Britain. I tell you we should make it an Olympic Event.

He prefers to pay it over the counter and get the p-i book stamped by the cashier, as it acts as a double check on the amount paid in.

So a printed receipt from a machine is no different?

Yes good idea Pink...with penalty points for fidgeting or moaning or even looking bored and bonus points for greeting the cashier by name and "isn't it a lovely day".

I don't know whether Tesco do a business account, but their counter service is well beyond the usual banking hours, being available for as long as store customer service is open.

Barclays branch locally has one counter clerk to handle all counter transactions including businesses, foreign currency, queries etc. It always has very long queues. In theory it has a person on hand to help with the machines but only one and not always then. When there is a person to help, they are often busy with complicated queries or showing someone how to use the machines. It has three automated paying in machines but on the last two occasions I have been in there (I am a Barclays customer), at least one is broken.

OH prefers to pay in his cash at Lloyds counter because there is a double check. They have a machine for counting notes but it is not 100% reliable (if some notes are old or torn) and once the money has gone into an automated system without you being present, you have to wait to see it reach your bank account and then argue about any errors. OH prefers to do it on the spot with the counter clerk present.

Midland locally has no staff at all it is fully automated. The other day I took some cash into the Post Office which had huge queues and all yes all the automated paying in machines were broken.

The banks including Lloyds are making much increased profits by getting their customers to do all the work.

Even greater incentives for your OH to educate the customers into paying electronically...

Midland? It hasn't been called that since 1999, -18 years ago. Are you sure you're going into the right bank?
