They'll be like todays Diesels, everyone will buy them and then 4-8 years down the line they'll be costing thousands to repair. Unfortunately because almost all manufacturers are now producing them, it'll be impossible to find reliable solid engined cars on the used market and the average age of cars on the road will drop dramatically (which i'm sure the manufacturers will not complain about).

If the car is a 3 year lease then don't worry about it.

If the car is a long term keeper then turbos need clean oil. If the service interval is long then consider halving it. Also check to hear if there is a oil or water pump to lubricate the turbo after switch off. You should hear a whirr. Even with one, consider idling the engine after a long or hard run for 30 secs. It's easy to do. Instead of stopping and switching off immediately, stop, gather your bits together, then switch off.

I own the car and whilst it is covered under a 3 year warranty anyway - I am just concerned that it is going to be over-stressed !

Not really overstressed. Its only putting out 100-140BHP/litre and that power is going to be north of 4,000 RPM which is higher than you'll use when driving about other than accelerating away or overtaking. My wife's 1995 Mitsubishi FTO non-turbo did 100BHP a litre and that did over 150,000 miles.

It is also a 3 cylinder so the size of the pistons, conrods etc are larger than a 1 litre 4 cylinder engine so can cope with more stress.

Why do you continue to post this rubbish? I've looked through your history before on this board and I've yet to find a single post you've made on motoring which has any basis in reality.

Not sure what relevance that has when the post you quoted was talking about power (you do know the difference between torque and power don't you?).

    90% 130ft/lbs? Only 125ft/lbs max isnt it?

109bhp, been a long time since a 2L engine produced less than that. 1980's Montegos produced 115bhp at base spec.

Torque is down also. But where the eg 140ft/lbs of torque in a 2L is linear and progressive the torque on a small turbo can be peaky.

When they reviewed the 1L Ford engine they raved about the torque for such a small engine. But then when they tested the same car loaded up it was a case of having to work the gearbox to stay in the powerband.
All well and good for nipping around the lanes on a nice day. But dreary and a PITA when you just need to get somewhere with a loaded car and having to change gear too often.

I tow a lot and have converted to diesel because its just pulls. I went from the Midlands to Cornwall 4 up and towing a caravan and didnt change gear once whilst on the motorway.

Small turbo cars are point and squirt. fun little go carts. But sometimes thats a chore.

Just look after it. Regular oil level checks, regular oil changes and after long journeys at high speeds, such as stopping at motorway service stations, leave the engine running for a minute or so to let the turbo spool down.

A friend had a smart roadster Brabus 699cc turbo which he had tweeked and remapped to about 120bhp. It did well over 100,000 miles with nothing more than regular servicing.
