How reliable are the new batch of 1.0 turbo engined cars - putting out as much power and torque as a 2.0 from 20 years ago ?
I have a new Suzuki Baleno - which does just that and am concerned for long term reliability...
Also - is the turbo itself going to eat engine oil (as Subarus supposedly do ?)
So far - so good with the car - average 53mpg - it drives superbly and comfortably !!

new cars are generally very well built and reliable. no reason to think that it will go wrong. Engineering has come on at a good pace and although a 1.0 turbo may sound ridiculous, they're very common and they seem to work well. If it's a new car and you're on PCP or leasing then you're probably swapping the car anyway after 3 years? which means it's covered fully under warranty

I own the car and whilst it is covered under a 3 year warranty anyway - I am just concerned that it is going to be over-stressed !

I've heard good things about this engine and if its linked to the auto box you've picked a winner!

It is linked to the 6 speed auto box
It pulls well from 1500 rpm and is smooth - considering it is only 998cc and 3 cylinders !!
I am impressed with it, so far

The engine will have been designed considering that it has a turbocharger and will not be just a naturally aspirated engine with a turbo bolted on!

Also it shouldn't use any oil and none of the subarus that i have owned or known about have used oil because of the turbo.

Suzuki have been making 3 cylinder engines, some turbo'd, for donkeys years, and they are pretty good at it. (I always thought that they let vauxhall have one, and vauxhall had to work pretty hard to redesign it so that the camchain would wear out- which is a good trick with a completely enclosed chain! - about the time when Bedford made a Suzuki Carry, and vauxhall did a clone of the wagon-R)

I wouldn't worry, just keep up with the oil changes and use the correct thin oil and it will see the bodywork out easily.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

I really wouldn't worry. haven't heard of many cases of modern turbochargers breaking on new cars.
  • Surely the time to worry and ask questions would be before you buy the car.
