    Just because your notice is up does not mean you MUST leave that very day. If you do, you are voluntarily homeless, and the local authority can't/won't do anything to help you.

    If you stay on after your notice expires, your landlord must apply to court to regain possession. This takes time. Months... If/when you are finally evicted, then you will find that the local authority have a statutory duty to assist. The temporary accommodation you get won't be desirable, but it will be a roof.

    Is it the morally right thing to do? Dubious.
    Will it resolve your issue? Yes.

    Will the letting agent tell you what price they would let you rent at? Seems daft to me, that would be very affordable, but they're not always sensible. Otherwise, you could look for a house share/lodgings as an interim measure - slightly harder as a couple I think, but usually cheaper, faster to arrange and can be less fussy about income.

    And then? (I admit I don't understand this approach) if they're a couple with no children what are the chances the council will house them and for how long?
    If they go through the courts and have to find another private accomodation and do a reference check, LL must would be mad to offer them a rental after court eviction.

    So yes, they could stay put, buy few weeks (6~8?) to what detriment?
