Smart Parking charge

Hi everybody, I`m looking for some advice.
I recently parked at a private car park at Clarkston Toll, Glasgow operated by Smart Parking. I was only going to be 30 minutes so I parked right next to the meter (there were 5 or 6 other cars next to the meter) and I got out to pay the 50 pence they require for parking 2 hours or under.
I went to the meter to pay the money and noticed the machine was broken, there were no notes or no signs on the machine to say it was broken, so I looked at all of the other cars and noticed they didn`t have any pay and display tickets on their dash/windscreens, so I went down to the shops and came back 30 minutes later.
I received a parking charge notice (PCN) letter saying that I had incurred a £60 fine for not paying for parking, I responded to their email saying the meter was not working, they acknowledged this and admitted that the machine wasn`t working (which I have in writing) but have stated that a machine at the far end of the car park was accepting payments (I couldn`t see it and there were no cars down that end and I`m unfamiliar with this car park as I`ve never parked there before).
This seems like a scam and not only would I like to avoid this charge, I would like to take this further as they have probably fined all of the other people there that day.
The companies trading name is smart parking ltd, their address is
Smart Parking ltd, Unit 43, Elmdon trading estate, Birkenhill lane, Marston green
Birmingham B37 7HE.
