Indicating right when going straight on

Well, today I encountered an interesting interpretation of the road rules...

I came up to a single-lane roundabout with the 1st exit a right-angle to the left and the 2nd straight on.

There was a lorry waiting to pull out of the road on the left.

I was going straight on and so didn't indicate on approaching.

The lorry started to pull out in front of me.

He saw me and stopped sharpish and then started gesturing that I should've indicated right.

I think you should look at your indicators as a communication tool.

If you can help relay your intentions on an odd road situation then it is better to do it.
We have a similar three way roundabout where it is custom to indicate left when taking the first junction which is in fact directly opposite. It is only when coming back the other way and exiting from the first junction. It then becomes obvious how frustrating it is to be waiting for none indicating drivers who exit at the first junction meaning it would not hamper your exit and you find yourself stopping for nothing.

Yes - I try to be courteous with my indicators and always indicate left before the exit I am taking.

In my case the roundabout was the opposite to yours, where the 1st exit was sharp left and the 2nd straight on.

So if I'd been taking the 1st exit I would have been indicating left on the approach.

You shouldn't indicate to go anything less than 12 oclock, I get properly sick of people on two lane roundabouts (yes a bit different), indicating right to go straight on, the number of times i've had to slam on the anchors for these idiots is just crazy, you just don't know if they're going to cut you up.

Why is that such a problem to you? I can't see why you'd need to slam the anchors on.

Lorry driver was totally wrong. (I'm assuming that "road on the left" means he was waiting to enter the roundabout from what would be the 1st exit from your viewpoint). If someone is approaching from your right and NOT indicating then you must presume they are going to pass across the front of you.

In that situation, if I was taking the 1st exit I'd be indicating left on approach to the roundabout. If I was going straight on I'd not be indicating at all until I'd passed the 1st exit and then would indicate left. If I was going right I'd indicate right on approach to the roundabout, then indicate left after I'd passed the exit before the one I wished to take.

    All very straightforward and clear.

Because the other vehicle is probably in the RH lane and then cuts across the front of the poster when they decide they're going straight on? (Assumes the exit is single lane not two lanes).

But is he can see the right hand indicator he's behind then. If that were the case he needs to look at his one driving.

Because at the point where they're about to turn off, your about to cross lanes for your RH exit and you need to figure out what the other driver is going to do.

You exit into lane 1 and they use lane 2.

You're far enough back to see their indicators so it's not an issue or are you driving in your usual style?

No, i'm going right, they're going straight on.......... At some point I have to change lanes on the roundabout in order to exit, otherwise i'd just keep going round and round and round......
