Hi,

I am travelling to Spain and was wondering if there was an official source to confirm how much hard cash in Euros is a person allowed to carry on the flight into Spain.

Many thanks

I can't remember the source, but I do know that if you carry ten thousand or more Euro (or sterling equivalent) then you have to declare it to Customs. No-one in their right mind would take that much money in cash, so unless you run a money-laundry the question is not of practical importance.

Be aware that even though amounts above 10K have to be declared, any amount above £1K leaves you open to question and the money liable for confiscation if you can't prove the source. Make sure you have ATM slips or a withdrawal note or something similar showing a (legitimate) source of the cash.

And expensive to get from a bureau de change! I usually have maybe €50 left over from my last trip, which will do me for taxis etc till I can get to the first ATM. And I try and come home with around €50 left over for the same reason.

The most I'll carry in my pocket is €100 (or even £100 in this country).

Never take more cash than your insurance policy will cover in case of loss or theft, usually £300 or £500 maximum

We are still in the EU for now, and there is no requirement to declare any amount of currency taken in or out of the UK from/to another EU country. Spain has the same rules.

The HMRC rules open to you questioning and possible confiscating of cash over £1000 if you can't provide evidence of a legitimate source of the cash. Obviosuly if you can subsequently prove the source you get it back.

  • I'd also be concerned about insurance for that cash in case it was lost or stolen. Most travel policies only have a very minimum cash cover. I've seen them as low as £100 but generally around £300. £500 is high cash limit.

This can happen, but you will not have violated any legal requirement to declare it as long as you are not leaving the EU.
