Depends on the exact requirements for location and niceness...
Best for proximity to the M25 in this price range: Orpington, Greenhithe & Gravesend.
Best for niceness a little further away: Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone.
You can use RightMove and other property portals to scan a wide area for a relatively narrow set of requirements, e.g. 1-2 beds within 10 miles of Sevenoaks (bottom SE corner of M25), between £175k & £200k.0 -
I live in Clacton On Sea and he would be able to afford a property here. I live right by the beach and it's very quiet. Despite the bad press it gets there are some nice parts. Also places like Little Clacton, St Osyth , Thorpe Le Soken would be affordable0

There are places further up the A12 towards London that 190k would buy somewhere reasonable. But assuming he works in London, the commute might put him off.0 -
The nearer to London you are the prices increase a lot. He'd have to commute from Kent too which is an area he's considering0

Thanks all its really helpful to know which places to steer clear from. He does have to drive to London sometimes , Chelsea at the moment, but where he works varies, he always has to drive so no worries about public transport. I thought tunbridge wells kind of area would be quite nice but nothing coming up on right move there in his price range...0

I think Ashford is a good shout, although he doesn't work in London it's a massive benefit for any future sale. 40 minutes into London on the fast train and right next to the M20.
There are nice new builds going up at the moment and the benefit of help to buy.0 -
The choice is slightly limited by budget, but there are a few.

There are also some possibilities in the SW corner:

There are a few nicer areas in Medway, but the choice in Chatham is limited mainly to St Mary's Island.
Something like this:-

For similar money, I think my preference would be Gravesend.0 -
I would agree with that.
There are direct trains from Chatham to Victoria, and most of the areas mentioned have useful transport links to London.0
