The engineer was not acting honestly and morally by putting you on the spot regarding complaints. It sounds like he was softening you up to ignore shoddy service and a potentially dodgy recommendation for further work. I think you should firstly report his poor work and then let his firm know he is trying to influence the feedback service.

If you do this the man has a chance to put his side of things to his employers and keep his reputation and job.

If you don't report him and he is running a scam you are allowing him to do the same thing to others who might be less savvy than you.
  • Sounds like this is a line he often uses to cover up poor work. If you go along with it, other people may suffer his poor service too. This is what feedback is for - if it's not honest, then it's useless.Tell it as it happened!
  • Of course you should complain. He cost you money - return the favour!

What exactly did he do that was not up to scratch? Far too vague a dilemma to comment on. Did he not fix the tv, was he rude, did he knock over the prize Ming vase? More info please!

    YES report him...
I am a satellite & Aerial installer who has honesty, integrity and pride in my work. If you need any work doing from any tradesman/woman
Go onto a site called "brownbook.net"
When you are on the site, in the search box put what you are after :
E.g. Aerial instal,Devizes. You will then get a list of all the tradesman in your area with reviews from previous customers ( good & bad ) !
You could quite easily submit this company onto brownbook yourself and leave an honest review, which will warn everyone in your area that he is a rogue !
  • I agree in principle with all of the above, but with a subtle difference in context.

If you paid for a service and did not receive it, request a refund. Consequences of any feedback to the engineer and his remuneration or bonus are not your concern.

However, the post doesn't provide much detail of what the expectations of the call-out were.

If, as an example, the OP requested a call-out to investigate a fault with an old appliance, and the engineer reported that parts for the appliance are no longer available, and recommended that the OP replace it or engage a specialist repairer, it would seem less reasonable to demand a refund and/or complain, and/or say that the engineer's work is shoddy.

A big fat YES he knows he is cra* at his job but doesn't want you to report him so its a sort of blackmail which I would tell his boss that to
  • I fail to see where the dilemma is. The customer has paid for a level of service which has not been supplied; this would normally result in a complaint. The fact that collateral damage in the form of the engineer's pay being cut would or may result is the engineer's "dilemma", not the customer's.
It's also possible to envisage a scam being operated here - lousy service provided, engineer persuades customer not to complain (sob story, "kids to feed, bills to pay...") and another guy gets sent out (at extra cost to customer).
