    ^^ This.

All the buyer needs to do is claim INR. Easy peasy.

As for you, why have you lost £12? As Soolin asks, did you send the item without being paid for it?

    I've made a discovery.
I just went on my Ebay account thru a browser, not the app.If I hover the cursor over the £ sign against the sale it shows me which email address was paid via Paypal. It's not the one that was used in the listing. It's my current email adress but with a word missing. How has that happened ?
The email address assigned to my Ebay and Paypal accounts is the correct one

Ebay don't pick up emails from anywhere, they use the one typed into the payment box when you list.

It has to be this way as it is possible to have more than one paypal account , they just need to be different types, so for instance I had a standard and a micro account. I add the email address I want to use to each listing depending on the likely sale price, but if ebay did it automatically they would only ever use my main account which would cost me more money in paypal fees.

and yet when I did a dummy listing to see what email address I had used it was different to the one that I've now highlighted as got paid

But it wasn't marked as paid. It was pended. The buyer had paid, but not paid you. Why on earth did you send it? If nothing else, you need to learn a lesson in checking payments.

It was marked as paid.It was never marked as pending. It was a pay immediately listing

I've emailed the guy who got the payment by mistake. He says he thought it was spam when he got the email from Paypal and reckons he can't access it anyway.

Update from the guy who the payment went to ...."That requires that I Iog back into the account. The system is asking me to verify my identity via mobile device but I no longer live in the US and it won't accept a number from my country."

You didn't check the payment, it was never cleared in your account because it wasn't sent to your account.

If you sent the item without checking payment then you are at to blame.

Why are you bothering with anyone else?

    Correct,I am to blame,I haven't argued otherwise.
I don't know what you mean by your last line.....as it happens the guy reckons he's been able to access his account now and will issue a refund to the buyer and hopefully he will then pay me

He will pay you? Oh dear. How will you defend an INR from him?

Do not bother with anyone else in this. Your buyer needs to file an INR. They will get their money back. You should not be entering a third party agreement with an unknown as you won't be able to defend an INR yourself.
