One of the key issues here is how well companies have dealt with this issue, and the reason Clarks are getting so much bad publicity from BBC Watchdog and elsewhere is that they’ve taken a very cavalier attitude towards their customers and offered them precious little for their wrecked expensive shoes.
Clarks used to have a reputation for quality, and for good customer service, but that was a long time ago when they manufactured their own shoes in Street, Somerset. Times have changed, the shoes are cheap imports sold at high prices, and the people running Clarks are very different from the family who used to run it.
Clarks are struggling at the moment, with store closures and job losses a distinct possibility. If they’d looked after their unhappy customers better they wouldn’t be getting all the bad publicity, and maybe they’d be in better financial shape.
