Put down a deposit on a 1 year used SUV today.

Dealer (Lookers) said they had to tell me about following products....

CWP - Tyres & alloy 100 £349 for 3 years cover
MDP - Minor Damage protection £399 for 3 years cover
Paint & Fabric Gardx £249
GAP insurance £Xxx (cant remember price)

They said they can discount any package for me for £100.
But are they worth it?

I was interested in the MDP (minor damage) as they say it covers all small scratches, chips, supermarket dents etc all for 3 years.

Welcome any open feedback. I do intend to keep the car for at least 2 years (till my free service cover finishes).

No. ALL of these things are at best over priced and at worst unnecessary.

They pitch them to you once you've committed to the car as thats when your guard is down.

GAP insurance - price it online. Its really cheap these days, compared to what a dealer will / can offer it to you at.

By far the worst part of buying a car is having to go through this nonsense.

We tell them straight that we don't need the talk, just give us the paperwork. We recently changed a car and there were 6 pages to sign just about the extras we didn't want.

Thats how they make their money these days. No money in new car sales.

The worst possible customer is a cash sale, no trade in and no (insurance type) extras.

Its hardly worth their while otherwise.

Where do you people buy cars? Go in, order car, go back later & pick it up. I've never experienced the hard sell of extras.

It's not just about the hard sell - it's now about covering backsides as well.

The dealers want to be able to prove that they offered choice so that no allegations of mis-selling can be made at a later date.

I bought from a Mercedes main dealer in Guildford, Surrey and they had a huge list of questions that they were required to ask pre-sale... standard question for all sales regardless of model.

It's just a sign of the times.

Just for interest - I bought the gap insurance from the dealer because it was actually a good price and the term was four years rather than three.

Wouldn't ever buy the minor damage insurance as I don't like the way those companies rectify scratches and dents... I'd rather use a bodyshop if I need any work done.

£349 for the alloys? Bloody hell. I just paid £45 per alloy to have four completely refurbished including powder coating.

Thanks for feedback, yes it was about 30mins to go through all this unnecessary info. If they had a leaflet I could take away and read would have been better.

The minor damage option certainly looks appealing but I still do not have a copy of the T&Cs, to determine if its worthwhile.

Probably wont bother with the rest. Last time I got myself a supagard kit from Ebay and polished my car for £20!

Shop around. My Merc dealer wanted £299 but you could buy similar cover for £110 online.

Shop around on Gap, my dealer was selling 3 years for £499, I got 4 years (deferred for a year as car insurance gave a new one in the event of a write off in the first year so effectively 5 years) and it was about £250

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
