We brought a brand new £1100 sofabed from Next. Looking back now, I'd probably just look on Gumtree, we got our second sofabed on there for £100, thankfully the second brought the average down.

Both sofabeds are amazing and we love them.

Not quite a non essential - but expensive. One of the first almost essentials we bought when we moved into our first rented flat was a washing machine - people said I was mad for getting an expensive Bosch (it was a Which? best buy). But I am still using it now - 21 years later!

Our biggest splurge has been a couple of grand on air conditioning split systems for two bedrooms. I guess technically non-essential, but worth every bloody penny.

When I first left uni and was flat hunting I got demoralised when I couldn't find anything so I blew my deposit on a car instead. I can remember the look on the hard-working EA's face, it was as if I'd committed a felony

It was only £5k on a 2 year old Fiesta and I quickly built up the ££ again as I had nothing else to do with my first few months' proper salary :)

This place needed a complete refurb - electrics, new bathrooom, new kitchen, new heating the lot. And I bought a Qooker Fusion boiling water tap :o it's just brilliant and even after three years I love it, along with the Franke bowl and a half sink.

No more kettle being put on to boil and forgotten about, no more drinking tea / coffee with water boiled three or four times and so tasting nasty.

Would do the same if ever moving in the future, though I sincerely hope not to.

Nothing like the scale of items purchased above, but as kitchen 'essentials' for our newbuild house (newly married) I bought a butter curler (Posh hotels used to offer dishes of butter curls, before wrapped mini portions became the norm.) and a melon baller, both of which I still have but have never used.

We didn't have a tv for a year , then, for another year, m-i-l rented a 'black and white' , as a gift for us.

Sweet wrappers , non recyclable plastic , the waxy paper from the bread , any broken kids toys , left over food as the bags changed every few days . It's the only bin in the house never really thought what we put in it .

About 40 yrs we decided we needed a new shed. So went out to buy a shed and came back with a stereo system. In-laws bought us a secondhand shed a few months later.
