AFAIK they are not legal tender but they are exactly the same as a legal tender coin except they say trial piece in tiny letters and the date is 2015.
they are collectable for that reason
Funnily enough they've just mentioned them on 5Live in a discussion on why many people haven't seen the new coins yet!0 -
What's the general consensus?
A little later a chap from the Royal Mint came on and said that they expect the cross over point where there are more new than old coins in circulation to be some time in the summer, and until then it's just a case of them being distributed to banks and post offices, and retailers being issued with them so that they eventually get into the hands of the general public.0 -
what was the mention re the trial piece
Just that a few had been pressed prior to 2016 in order to calibrate machines, it didn't go into details of value. Although I did have a look on ebay and I don't think I'll be bidding for one at those prices! An I was even more surprised to see what some people were asking (generally with little response) for standard coins, one wanted £80 for a 'rare' 2016 dated coin, I don't think they are that rare when I have received 6 in the last week!0
