struggling to sell my car

That's a nice thought. Very helpful....not
And no I don't have the original air filter box, as I didn't fit the intake. Why would anyone want the original anyway? Makes the car faster.
Pound to a penny that's complete cobblers. It makes the car noisier - but almost certainly makes the car less powerful as it's right in the firing line for the hot air off the radiator.I am not going to be attempting to fix the rust, and have no idea what "T cutting" is anyway.
And I'm not trying to get "top money", I don't see how wanting 5-600 pounds is top money.
Yes you are. £600 for a rotten, unroadworthy MX5 is strong money. There's plenty for sale for that money, many better than yours - you need to be realistic about that.0 -

Makes it sound faster. Big difference. It may actually make it slower in reality. And you did tell your insurance, right?
'course, if you'd done something about the rot when you were given the advisory on the 2015 MOT, you'd probably not be here now.0 -
Well thats for the OP to measure. Wouldnt be £200 though.
He could easily make that in selling the easily removed parts
If he's got some way to get rid of what's left, sure. My point is that for a gamble-project it's very much a buyers market. Especially if it can't (legally) be driven away.0 -
I have said several times, that I have only had the car one year. I did not even know it was possible to look at a car's MOT history when I bought it, and it had no servicing from that time in the service book.Makes it sound faster. Big difference. One of the sills had a section cut out and replaced last year, but the rust is already back. So don't tell me I haven't done anything - its just that I have reached a point where I don't want to keep spending this kind of money on the car.
And no, what the insurance company doesn't know can't hurt them. The car has a lot of custom stuff on it so don't really feel like having my premiums bumped up.
That was my initial thinking - my garage said it would be £500 for a basic job to pass the MOT. Average price for a car like mine is about £1200, hence listing for £800 and then being knocked down to £600-700 ideally. I guess I may have to re list it at a lower price, the ad on ebay expires today for example.Insurance. Your non-standard filter (and whatever else) will potentially make a huge difference to the insurance premiums for someone looking at a sub-£500 convertible.
It's a lot of money for something that's unsafe, looks neglected, and will need major work to get through an MOT that runs out in 5 months.
In current condition your target market is someone who wants something to run about in for the summer, until it falls apart or fails the MOT, and doesn't care too much about the condition of it.
Your ideal punter is an enthusiast who has access to cheap welding, and/or wants to use it as a track toy.
Replacing the sills is presumably at least a £400 job, and anyone without access to do it cheap will be factoring that into the price. So you should be aiming to price it as (cost of a good one) - (welding work) - (something for the convenience of having to get the work done).
What else will it fail it's MOT on?
Shouldn't fail the MOT on anything else, according to the garage.0 -
Right. Gotcha. What could possibly go wrong in the event of a claim? I mean it's not like they'll hand you a large bill, is it?And no, what the insurance company doesn't know can't hurt them. The car has a lot of custom stuff on it so don't really feel like having my premiums bumped up.
Oh, wait. That's exactly what they might do. Along with cancelling your policy - you know how you're asked if you've EVER had a policy cancelled? Yeh, you'll be answering "yes" to that for the rest of your life. And if you say "no", they'll spot that you lied sooner or later.
Just to save a few quid premium on some fairly ineffective barrymods...0 -
My car is not even insured so I don't see what the problem is. Also don't see what your problem is, its up to me how I sort my insurance out.Right. Gotcha. What could possibly go wrong in the event of a claim? I mean it's not like they'll hand you a large bill, is it?

I didn't even realise the air filter was custom until last month, I had no way of knowing what was factory fitted and what wasn't.0 -

So you'd be selling it for £1200 - £600 (500 + VAT) = £600, so you're already £195 over priced), and probably need to knock off at least another £100 for "why didn't you just do the sills yourself?". So £500 at most.
Then you're at the road worthy stage, expect to knock at least another £100+ off for having to get a trailer to take it away.
And at least another £100 off for all the non-standard stuff.
What about tyres? Much left in them?
Then there's the rest of it. Is it really mint apart from the sills?
So realistically, you're looking at £300 for it, at the top end. And given your attitude to safety and insurance, you really should get rid of it for whatever you can get before you kill yourself in it.0 -
I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt as not being a troll, but if that's the case then you're a f:mad:ing idiot. My car is not even insured so I don't see what the problem is. I don't buy that at all, especially if you're talking about the rest of the non-standard stuff. How did you only just find out about this stuff, as you decide to sell it?0 -
