Duke of Edinburgh Cooking Night

Hi guys,
I'm after some help, I am a Civilian Instructor with the Air Cadets and we are holding a cooking night next week. I'm trying to keep it simple and base it around food that would be cooked/eaten on a Duke of Edinburgh Expedition.
I'm after some ideas of meals that can be put together, they have to be cooked on a trangia/gas stove, the ingredients will need to be carried all day/2 days in a backpack so need to be lightweight and need to ideally cooked quite quickly (no fresh meat as no fridge lol).
Any ideas gratefully received. Many thanks.

Packet savoury rice with chunks of sausage, the ones that don't need a fridge ?

My DD has used flavoured couscous, sachets of tuna in mayo, cartons of flavoured passata served with pasta on her DofE trips. It is a challenge.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

Straight to the wok noodles are good as they don't take long to cook and pack easily in to a rucksackZebras rock0

Thank you guys some good ideas there. Had thought about savoury rice and the straight to wok noodles - just wanted some inspiration to make a tasty meal with these ingredients lol, some good ideas given here.
Trying to inspire them - not easy!!0 -

Miso is good for flavour, although cooking it in a cuppa-soup might appeal more to DofE age people.
Tinned fish, egg or grated cheese are all good sauces of protein to go with it.
Tinned corn is the smallest tinned vegetable and would add the veg element, although fresh mushrooms are light enough to carry and can cope with some in-back squashing.Zebras rock0 -
Youre at a disadvantage in that thyere not on an expedition. When youve been walking all day even bad tasting food tastes good.
Do you not have access to military rations? Or discounted military rations as that was my go to on dofe.
A go to dish of mine is spaghetti carbonarra. Spaghetti, about 100 ml of double cream, a couple of eggs (take them in a container pre cracked or mix with the cream), bacon and hard cheese. Ready more or less as soon as the spaghetti is. You just need to be careful with temperature and the cream, keeping it near a frozen pack of bacon (lardons) helps.
Cous cous can be quite flavorful with added mattesons type sausage for a bit of meat.
Im not overly concerned about taste when out just need something to keep me going. Got a camp cookbook at home so will have a look for anything that looks particularly appetising.
Breakfast porridge and dried fruits. add milk powder to the porridge mix for a better taste.0 -
You could use some of those ready cooked pasta packets and some beanfeast to make a veggie spag bol

I remember having a potato and bacon pack thing for breakfast on my DofE that just needed frying - http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/sainsburys-bacon-brunch-with-onion-400g something like that
All of those should be fairly resilient for backpack-carrying and don't need to stay cold0 -
My 14 years old nephew was on a DOE expedition at the weekend and he took cereal bars for breakfast, crisps and bread for lunch and noodles for dinner!0

That works for one day - we are now trying to come up with something more nutritious for silver expedition as it is longer. The leader also has a thing about creating rubbish too so cans aren't really allowed - hence the tuna sachets. She also vetoed instant porridge pots - they have to use oats and do it properly.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans
