They are using the lion logo as it is taken from the lion statues in front of the main HQ of HSBC Hong Kong.

I "think" it is meant to ward off evil, etc, as HSBC wants to be financially viable and profitable. It's a bit like someone wearing a religious symbol, e.g. a necklace with a cross on it, rabbits foot, etc, etc, as they have firm beliefs (whether religious or superstitious).

Supposedly, if you rub the paws of the lions, it is meant to give you good luck (Career, Marriage, Exams, etc), but I guess it depends how superstitious you are. Out in the Far East, many people are quite religious, and so they like to follow superstition.

The look sharp. I hope First Direct follow suit with something better looking, I like the black but the positioning of the text and the massive word 'DEBIT' just seems so messy to me.

The lions which sit outside the HSBC headquarters in Hong Kong are called Stephen and Stitt. Stephen is growling, so it is Stitt that is depicted on the cards.

I quite like the modern design choice, but on the MasterCard version, the new MasterCard logo is more prominent than the red HSBC kite logo, which is a mistake.

I liked the old "world" design (which Premier customers sadly never had) and the new 'lion' design is ok.

However, I agree - the new MasterCard logo does look very out of place on the Premier credit card from what I see on the Vietnam website.

The other one I am not sure about is the Premier debit card - a purple lion on a dark gray background just doesn't seem quite right.

Not sure why HSBC's 'Premier' customers are getting the 'worst' designs though that is very subjective..

It's beyond me how much attention people pay to how their pieces of plastic look, especially now when these pieces hardly ever get to other people's hands.
I've got 8 kittens on my Barclays debit card, makes me smile when I tap it :)

Does anyone have the new lion design on their Advance debit card?

I recently had to get new cards for my personal.and my joint account however now due to the new design I have 2 identical cards. Very annoying. Only option hsbc could give me was to mark my cards.

Hoping hsbc sees the error of this 1 design for all.

Just received a replacement Advance card after damaging mine. It's the old design interestingly.

Not that I'm bothered, I just thought they'd rolled out the new deisng already.
