I think that they would be allowed to keep your contact details on their system, as you are a customer, and if there was a problem they would need to be able to contact you.

You should however be able to request to opt out of other communications from them.

I'm wanting Southern Water to leave me alone. I'm paying by direct debit each month so they aren't chasing me for money. I don't want to be contacted with surveys by phone text or email. They've recently messed up twice in two months & each time I contacted them to sort it out & each time I get spammed.

Can I legally demand they remove this, last time I phoned them they lied & said they hadn't got my current number & insisted that if I didn't give them an email address they wouldn't deal with me. Yet today they managed to send me a text asking how they did, on the phone number they claimed they hadn't got

Legitimate stuff bills etc can be sent by post.

To re-iterate what kathrynha said, you cannot reasonably expect Southern Water to delete contact information for you. They are entitled to use such information to contact you as required about your account with them. You cannot put the genie back into the lamp. If you did not want your supplier to have such information, you should not have given it to them in the first instance.

However, you are able to opt out of unsolicited marketing information.
Do do this, if you have an online account with them, you should be able to set your mailing preferences from there.

Otherwise, you should write to the following making such a request:

    Data Protection Officer
    Southern Water
    Southern House
    Yeoman Road
    Worthing
    BN13 3NX.
