Do you have a link to the app? the app I found after searching doesn't mention calls.

    http://www.tescomobile.com/tescomobile-app
    https://www.tescointernationalcalling.com/calling-app/

Named Internatinal Calling but does UK just fine, £1 starter credit is free, I managed to use only a few p in mobile calls of that so far.

Quality isn't quite as good as 'native' wifi calling that the mobile operators offer using your usual minutes.

... but Three U.K have WiFi Calling available to PAYG customers.

It's available to all customers, but IME, the call quality is awful.

My experience is that Three wifi calling, native mode (iPhone 5s in my case) so not via the app, is indistinguishable from a Three mobile call with a strong 3G signal. Your mileage may differ purely as a result of your broadband performance.

Native WifiCalling from a supported phone versus in app wifi calling is a night and day difference.

I've often wondered though, how the Skype app, which is essentially wifi calling, manages to achieve near-landline quality when making calls to uk or global landlines.

That's a good point, as Skype can be really good, perhaps the app is set to work on a very low quality level? As it's always awful.

In bandwidth terms, doing a Skype call to a landline will only sound like... a landline, not like the near hifi you can sometimes hear on Skype to Skype. But I almost never had an intermittent or glitchy landline call with Skype so there's some secret sauce in there.
