mrs had a bang

Options
just after so quick advice please.

Her indoors was reversing into a car parking space 3-4 mph and hit someone elses bumper. Got out and had a look over ( and she is the honest sort ) couldn't see any marks on hers or ours.

Didn't have a pen and doesn't have a photo mobile ( yes its that basic ). Could see she was under CCTV but couldn't see the driver. A driver opposite watched her then went about his shopping.

Whats the best bet here? She thinks she has to report to police according to the web? I say insurer or site security? even with no visible damage at all.

If its the insurer what do you say to avoid insurance going up ( they seem to want to push it up for any reason nowadays )

Cheers.

  • Im presuming here that if you tell the insurance if the other person thinks theres an issue they can get details of the car and go through the MIB to pursue a claim?

Apart from the fact she had no pen and will now get a camera phone leaving a note opens you up to any bump they may now think they can find ( although CCTV would show the contact points )

if no damage was done to either vehicle why would you want to report it to anyone? would only risk putting up your insurance premium..

Better left quiet imo. What your insurance company doesn't know can't hurt them.
  • I agree but just in case the other bloke sticks a note on the banged car

( I would hope he would just see theres no damage and ignore it )

Because you're not a !!!!, and it's the law? Because one person's opinion of 'no damage' is different to another's?

Or because it's the decent thing to do, in case the other owner doesn't concur with the OP's (presumably) untrained wife's assessment of the lack of damage?

Clearly not something that would bother you.

But both parties have agreed there was no damage, there is literally no benefit to informing insurance companies... this is just petty.

I missed the bit about both parties agreeing.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

No they haven't. The OP says the other party wasn't present and someone else watched this all happen, so by driving away knowing there has been an incident, they're not only potentially breaking the law, but also morally bereft.

'I didn't have a pen' - erm, you're outside a supermarket, love. Pretty sure they have pens.
  • She spoke to police just now and they just said people don't always have a pen to write a note. She just has to report it in person. Copper seemed quite amused apparently.

To go back to the OP's original query: his wife is right. She has to report it to the police ASAP and in any case within 24 hours. Failure carries a minimum of 5 points.
  • See what the police advise her. She's off there now.
