VW engines are great, some of the best, but they can't be common rail, so from the top of my head pre 2000.

When you take into acount the reduction in fuel economy using veg oil, it actually pretty close to just using diesel!
    So really whats the point.
I used veg oil myself for a coupel of years when diesel was near £1.50 a litre, and veg oil was 50p, but now theres no point in risking it.
As pointed out already, unless your car is from the 1990's you will probably just destroy the fuel pump.

In south wales it was such a problem they had a squad of traffic police I believe looking for it specially. I believe they were called the Frying Squad.

    Almost Seriously...

If you lived near the coast and had something with a suitable (old or modified) engine - could you offer to collect used veg oil from the chip shops/donut stalls etc and filter it. Maybe even in a boat engine?
I need to think of something new here...

A&B Oils of Southampton have been collecting used catering oil for years and years. They've since rebranded to some posh name like Oleco but there's still a recycling plant near the Itchen bridge (or at least I noticed it there last footie season). So there is competition for used oil..

People I know in the catering industry used to pay to have it collected and it was not an ingsignificant amount of money. May have changed now though.

There's not a huge amount of difference in fuel consumption and with oil at Asda being around 80p a litre it makes sense for anyone running a suitable car (or suitably modified car).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it cleaner since you're not burning a fossil fuel, and also more sustainable, as, unlike fossil fuels, you can grow more.

Whether it's more sustainable is a debatable point as it takes land out of use for food production, if you use new veg oil. Using recycled oil is a different matter, of course, but still not entirely without issues due to the recycling procedure itself.
