I often wonder what people expect retailers are going to do with change-of-mind electronics which aren't faulty but have been used and the packaging opened.0

They get sent off to a specialist company, who resets the device, cleans and repackages it. It is then sold as "refurbished".If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
They are 2 different retailers, regardless of parent ownership. And they are clearly (still at least) 2 different operating companies. So it's not surprising they have different returns policies.
No doubt on items that both sell, there is probably price differences as well. Again, just because they have the same parent, it doesn't mean everything is standard across the board.
If there was even the slightest chance I'd need to return something I bought, I'd either do it online or check out that specific retailers returns policies.0 -
Its always very petty when people bring this up and doesn't help anyone. If you turn up with a product and a receipt at 99% of stores then you will be allowed to return the item by the store.
Most shops offer gift receipts which can be given with a present to allow the receiver to return the goods.
It's equally petty when people decide that ignoring the law is the best course of action. Of course in many instances the store will be happy to deal with the gift recipient, but if Argos decided to play hardball they would have the law entirely on their side, and I don't see why telling the OP that is a problem.0 -

If someone didn't do this on a thread, the recipient of a gift could unknowingly travel some distance to a shop to exchange/return an item only to be advised that they actually have no rights as they didn't purchase the item.0 -

This is the praise/vent and warning board.
Posting very petty points of law about consumer rights (which don't really have any relevance to the point the OP was making) on a persons vent is unnecessary and not what this forum should be about.
Shame on you.0 -

Is it merely a petty point though to state that only the person making the purchase can deal with the shop? To me that seems very relevant indeed.
Many of us here take certain things for granted, like the original purchaser having any rights. I'm struggling to understand your viewpoint on this, but as I have nothing to feel shame about (at least, not in this thread) I'll just hope that if you re-read what you've posted along with the comments of other posters you'll realise that your reaction is out of step with the majority.
