sky vs freeview

  • We cancelled our sky way back when in nov 06 and went with freeview.
Trouble is our aerial isn't great so at certain times of the day and in bad weather the tv is unwatchable.
We noticed that Sky are giving new customers £110 through quidco.. and we're seriously considering it.. especially now as you can get 4 mixes of channels for £19 a month which is a bargain compared to when we had it before. They're also offering £10 credit and half price installation at the moment..

    Is it worth it?

Ahhhh the bad aeriel / reception argument.... Presumably as you had SKY before you still have the dish and box, or can get a second hand box off ebay for £40.....

Freeview has a little friend FREESAT

it may come down to whether you really want sky / the channels

Though I'm not on freeview, recieve tv, internet and phone for £25/month from tiscali. Switching to sky will be more or less the same cost, tempted to pocket £110 they are offering! same idea as u!

If i were u i would go for it, benefits being you get extra channels, no more weather problems and 110 cash. on downside you'll be spending £150/year for their service(first year) and more the next year. If you can afford without compramising your repayment targets it is a good idea!

It's fairly geographically limited on the tv/internet/phone bundle from SKY, even in a largish (50000 people) town they didn't offer it for a friend. No chance here in the fens then.

We don't get it here either... another one of the reasons we cancelled.

  • Are you going for it purely for the cashback or do you actually want Sky back?

well the cashback would be the swaying argument.. but it's a combination of both really as our freeview reception is !!!!!!. lol
That and it's a lot cheaper than the last time we had it.... I mean 4 mixes for £19 a month? Bargain!

That's a point.. we're with tiscali at the moment and pay them for the line rental.. would that be a problem even though it's technically a bt line?

If its technically a BT line then there shouldn't be a problem - BT cut me off a few weeks ago (  their fault   ) and I was without a phone for about two weeks - Sky and BB weren't affected at alll!!

You should get a free dish and box OR I may be able to refer you for a free sky+ box as opposed to the vouchers

  • If you're having trouble with your freeview reception then you may as well go for sky. Digital switchover will be happening in your area between 2010 and 2011, so if your reception is !!!!!! now you would need to upgrade your aerial before then anyway, and get it installed properly.

Sky is pretty handy in that it'll give you guaranteed reception, and post digital switchover many channels will become available for free that you currently have to pay for.

I'd go for it, just don't go for a huge monthly subscription. After a year, you can go to freesat for just £20 one off payment if you're fed up of paying monthly.

    Hope this helps!

BTW- if you or anyone else need questions answering re digital switchover PM me- I'm happy to answer any queries just can't do it openly as I work for Auntie ;)

IA seriously, there are a zillion channels of sh*te on there. I've got Virgin Cable; my house is in one of those anal kinds of neighbourhoods which won't allow aerials and sky dishes. Every time I sit down thinking 'let's see what's on the box' I get so frustrated with the absolute nonsense they show. I did find some good shows, but they are on their 89th repeat now. If it weren't for the kids and their disney channel fetish I'd ditch the whole thing.

Not sure if your line is still technically a bt line IA! My mum went from sky to NTL which then went to virgin so she wanted to switch back to sky. She had to pay BT an installation fee of about £125. (for flicking a switch) however, when I rang sky to query it they did say they had an offer on to refund the BT installation fee.

However, check out the tiscali website as I know they are adding the sky package to their services and for not much more than you are paying now....
