The dream house becomes a nightmare.

So after 7 months of searching, I finally found the right house. Hours spent every day going through rightmove, walking past potential houses, viewing etc. Finally I found a house which is in an excellent location, reasonably priced for its size(4 bed link detached) and a quick exchange. I actually increased my budget and as carefully as possible researched the area, walking past the house at night and during the day several times per week.

Just this evening at 10pm, I'm in one of the bedrooms with the window open listening to the silence. A young man next door comes out into the garden, don't know if he lives there or is a visiting friend/relative of the 50 something couple residing in the property, and starts shouting about how he got arrested carrying a knife, had to go to hospital to get stitched up after a fight and his mate got arrested after he forgot to take his pills.
He then goes inside and starts shouting, slamming doors. Its only a quarter of my garage thats attached to his house but he's so loud I can hear him upstairs.

And just like, that the dream was over! :rotfl:Got to laugh or I'll cry!

Seriously though, you can't live next door to people like that. It's especially surprising as I chose an area that is supposes to not have people like that. In all my years I've never actually heard a neighbor boast about being arrested with a knife and I've lived in quite a few areas.

I was going to teach from the new house, maybe I'd want to start a family one day. No way I'd do it in this place.

So its back on rightmove, I'll do the property up and maybe rent it then sell it next year. No financial loss just major inconvenience and disappointment.

No question in this thread really, just venting. Its often pot luck with neighbors, you don't know what you're going to get until you move in, and a good area is not a guarantee of good people.

All the vendors have to say is if they personally have had any trouble with the neighbors as far as I know. If they themselves didn't mind or care about their neighbor being a p##ck, they don't have to say anything.

Thanks for reading, may those who are house hunting have better luck than I!

One of your neighbours gets a bit shouty, one time, at ten pm and by 11:30 you've mentally packed up and moved on already?
    Okay then.

So what are you going to say when asked by a potential buyer why you're moving after a year or so?

But even if you find that you have excellent neighbours they can always move and you can find yourself with new neighbours with whom you do not get on......

You could be forever on the move and never satisfied....

If you think it's that big a deal why haven't you called the police?

Completely and utterly agree with the above. Sounds like the neighbour has a mental illness issue or possibly drink problems. No idea how you make sure you avoid 'people like that' via selection of an area to move into.

In a weird way I'm glad as so many people assume/judge that it's just social housing.

You don't even know if the guy lives there and you're moving out?
