Neighbor dispute has become nasty and intolerable

Hi all,

I live in cul de sac and have been here for the past 2 years. We had great elderly neighbors but unfortunately one has fallen ill and has been moved into retirement home. The house was put up for sale and quickly sold about 6 months ago.

Being relatively new to the area our self, my wife and I introduced ourselves to the new neighbors and everything seemed fine. One day, I went up to mow the garden for the winter and noticed a smell coming out of the neighbors kitchen (terraced homes). It was cooking but particularly pungent but never took much issue with it as I thought it would be a one off. The other neighbors and I started to notice the smell coming round to the front of the houses and you would be hit with the smell coming out of the house at times. I was not too sure the best way to approach the situation but thought if they were made aware of it, they'll be more considerate.

Bumped into the husband coming back from work and jokingly said "That curry smells nice" as a way for him to know that I noticed. He smiled and waived me on and nothing changed. A few weeks later I get a knock on my door husband and son accusing me of complaining to the council about the smell. It wasn't me but did let them know my thoughts that the smell was too much. From then on things have been quite icy, smell just as bad but wasn't bothering me too much up until recently I was inside my home for the most part.

As it has become warmer, the family and I are doing up the garden to properly use for the first time (we had no outdoor furniture and would only go outside to keep it tidy) and have purchased furniture, slide and a football net to use. Unfortunately the smell is so bad the garden is no longer usable. The smell is bad most of the time but when they are cooking it really gets in your throat and makes you feel sick. We are also getting most of the problem as they have the end of terraced property.

I approached with my wife to discuss it and we were rudely dismissed and had the door literally slammed in our faces. All the neighbors on my side sent a joint letter to the council who investigated but said there was nothing they can do. Our garden is uninhabitable. I even took the football from the garden to play in the park with my son and had the curry smell on my hands for hours, it has coated everything. As they are home owners, I don't see them moving anytime soon and it is just so stressful, so upsetting, that this perfect little home is turning into a nightmare because of ONE family.

The neighbors son has also become intimidating, making the odd comment if he sees us or the other neighbors, accuses us of being racist and playing his music in his car quite loud. I have no idea how to deal with this, everyday seeing them or smelling them is a daily irritant and it's taking it's toll on me.

Council says there is nothing they can do. What on earth can I do?

How can a smell stick to a football that's been outside? Seriously?

You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

Nasty and intolerable seems to pretty much sum that up.
