M6 Toll Refund requested

I opened a M6 Toll Tag account in 2014 on recommendation from the kiosk person as it was a way to jump queue and save money on every journey through Tolls on M6. I go north 4/5 times a year.
I ordered my tag and deposited a credit of £30 in the account. I changed cars over 4 times and never fitted the tag.
I recently contacted them an asked for a refund as the tag was unused and not required.
I was told that there is no credit left on my account as they charge a monthly lease fee for the tag, whether you use it or not, the lease fee has used up my credit on account.
There was definitely no mention of a lease fee on my agreements at the tie, I wouldn't have signed up to it. I am very savvy when it comes to signing agreements.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
I have written to them requesting a refund and claiming I was mis sold an agreement that was of no benefit to me whatsoever.
Anyone else got any advice?
thanks

Well it's pretty clear on the website now that there is a lease fee for the tag so I'd say the onus is on you to prove you weren't told about it at the time.

It's amazing how many times the phrase "mis-sold" is bandied about when in actual fact the majority of times the thing was 'mis-bought'

It's very clear both on the M6 Toll tag website and T&Cs that there's a monthly lease fee of £1 and it's been like that for many a year.

Use the Wayback machine to view the website as it was in 2014?

You can't presume the OP is wrong simply based on what the website says now. The archived/cached site from 2014 will indicate whether OP may be right. :)

There's been a well publicised monthly lease fee for well over a decade, I don't believe the OP didn't have this information available to him when he got his.

It was clear back then as it is clear now.

If you've checked the Wayback machine then great. I didn't - I was just commenting that websites can and do change over time, so it is wise to check sources before condemning someone as a fool. ;)

There's no obligation to visit a website when you sign up to a contract.

OP - do you have a paper agreement that you signed?

Here's the relevant webpage from Jan 2014: (but I know that this doesn't mean that the info was definitely on the paperwork that the OP had)
    https://web.archive.org/web/20140101013336/http://www.m6toll.co.uk/ways-to-pay/tags/

Get a Tag - Save Money!

Tags are the M6toll's electronic pre-payment system. They're the easiest, most efficient way to pay, allowing you to pass through a dedicated tag lane, usually without the need to stop, and you save money on every trip.

For a monthly lease fee of just £1 per Tag, you benefit from a 5% discount per trip. For regular users the saving soon mounts up.

A Tag is a small self contained electronic device which fixes to your windscreen

TBH you can go back as early as 2005 to see they were charging a monthly lease fee. I find it very hard to believe that this information wasn't available to the OP, either in his agreement or associated documentation regardless what was on their website.
