Rescuing a 50th birthday......

You can buy birthday cakes from supermarkets. Cupcakes as well.0

After a lot of people recommending supermarket cakes (especially M&S), why are you deciding you'll have to get him an iced slice?
Are there no supermarkets near you?
I didn't want a fuss on my 50th, but I'd have been really upset if I'd been presented with an iced slice. I'd have felt that my husband couldn't be bothered.0 -
I'd turn this round and ask whether if you got a cake who would want to eat it. Unless you have loads of people round (which you're not) to share it you don't really need a big cake.
It was my birthday a couple of week's ago (not a big one) and DD1 just brought round a fancy cupcake, stuck a candle in it and sang to me. DH ate the cupcake (and the other 3 in the packet from Sainsbury's) later in the day. Generally we buy a small lemon drizzle or carrot cake for a family birthday but this year rest of the family were busy or away.
Why not go out together for a meal, take a small cake with a 50 candle and ask the waiting staff to bring it out at pudding time. Or have a very small cake at home together and a glass of bubbly before you go out. Or go out for the day to somewhere he'll enjoy and fit a small cake in somehwere. It's spending time together that'll mark his birthday not gifts or cakes.0 -
As a small independent baker I'm shocked by this. OP, does the original bakery have insurance? I'm appalled they have left you in the lurch like this most part time bakers have friends / competitors who will cover in an emergency and the onus should be on them to source a replacement.
You do have sometime. I produce a cake last night for a client who phoned in a panic at 7:45pm - the party they had told me was on Thursday was actually today! Obviously we had to scale back the original design and have a rethink on what could be achieved in the time available but I was able to make sure they had a centrepiece cake (which they just sent a cab to collect!) There will be a local bakery who can help. Where are you? I can make enquiries with the Sugar craft guild local to you who might be able to help.0 -
Where are you OP? I've just had a beautiful one done by a Facebook lady who is a friend of a friend and it was lovely - I'd be happy to recommend her if you were in the bristol areaI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. I have a cake-making friend in Herne Bay if that's any good. No idea how she's fixed, but she's good in a crisis and I'm sure could make something to budget

Ah thanks guys ......yes I was having a throwing my toys out of the pram moment (have always said a good friend tells you what you need to hear rather than what you want to hear).
As for the ice slice idea it was because he loves ice slices & I was going to get those number candles so would spruce it up.
Yes he's not having a party as such but having people around & it was going to be a relative small one.
Fortunately one of the girls in work has come up trumps & ive got a replacement coming, cheaper than the original & I know will be made perfectly - have tasted her cakes in the past so I know what it's like.
Thanks once again

That wasn't clear from your first post.gettingtheresometime wrote: »Firstly I know the world will still keep on turning but I need your help.
It's hubby's 50th birthday on Saturday and he's always said he didn't want a party - which I can understand! - but to mark the day I ordered him one of those novelty cakes from a local baker.
Everything was good - even had a text if her yesterday morning asking what time we were picking up the cake - but came home late to an email from her sent early evening saying she was ill & couldn't do the cake.
Any suggestions as to what do now? I doubt I can get a cake made at such short notice & I really did want to mark the day....he's been telling me for years that he'd never make 50 so I've been winding him up saying he's got days to make good on his promise.
I don't want to get one of those picture cakes - in any event the bloody machine is always broken at our local Asda. The only thing I can think of is to get an custard slice and stick a 50 candke in it - but even saying that it sounds half hearted and looks as if no effort has been put in.
Help me MSErs!0 -
Do you have a Costco near you and a friend with a card? They ice fab cakes that are quite reasonable. Where are you based?0

Thanks for getting back to us. I'm glad you got the cake sorted. Hadn't realised you were having a party. Hope it all goes really well.:)0
