Rescuing a 50th birthday......

Firstly I know the world will still keep on turning but I need your help.
It's hubby's 50th birthday on Saturday and he's always said he didn't want a party - which I can understand! - but to mark the day I ordered him one of those novelty cakes from a local baker.
Everything was good - even had a text if her yesterday morning asking what time we were picking up the cake - but came home late to an email from her sent early evening saying she was ill & couldn't do the cake.
Any suggestions as to what do now? I doubt I can get a cake made at such short notice & I really did want to mark the day....he's been telling me for years that he'd never make 50 so I've been winding him up saying he's got days to make good on his promise.
I don't want to get one of those picture cakes - in any event the bloody machine is always broken at our local Asda. The only thing I can think of is to get an custard slice and stick a 50 candke in it - but even saying that it sounds half hearted and looks as if no effort has been put in.
Help me MSErs!

don't despair: google 'cake makers' in your area because there may be well be one who can do something simple as a rush job.
also how big a cake do you need? If you can cope with 'large', and you know anyone with CostCo membership, their celebration cakes are really very acceptable.
And, there's always the diy option: even if it's nothing special to look at, if you make a cake and stick a candle in it that's a whole lot better than a custard slice.
Whatever you do, do NOT attempt to light 50 candles on a cake. Ever. Especially not if there's a smoke alarm in the building. :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I'd just go to one of the bigger supermarkets and pick up a cake there. Often aimed at children, they'll do some suitable for adults.
It doesn't sound like your husband will mind.0 -
Oh crumbs!
We've used personalised cakes that you order online and are posted out. You probably do have enough time to get it for Saturday. Have a search online, there are a few companies out there. We've used Bakerdays.com a few times. (I don't work for them, honest). Sorry for not posting a link, my phone is being a right @#&! Good luck and happy 50th to your DH :beer:0 -
Try looking on any local groups on Facebook- we have a few recommended cake makers who could do one by Sat but no idea where you are0

Any cake would do - just "a cake". You're overthinking it in a "woman way" - and, as he's not bothered, "any cake" is a cake and more than good enough.
I'm speaking from the perspective of somebody who never had a birthday cake after age 10 ... had no 18th, no 21st, no 30th, no 40th, no 50th party/celebrations or any interest shown in my birthday whatsoever.0 -
Marks and spencer do very nice birthday cakes off the shelf.0

M&S have some nice cakes to order online and collect in store (although it might be a little late to order.)
Also, as someone else said, if you have a local fb group, ask for recommendations for cake makers.0 -
Supermarkets sell plain white iced cakes so could you get one (or a couple of those and stack them) to decorate with some of his favourite things? Make it a bit silly and it will cover for any imperfections! The decorations don't have to be edible - toy cars, whatever he's interested in really - or you could add a selection of his favourite foods/sweets/cakes, profiteroles etc. I wouldn't be impressed by a custard slice with a candle but a cake with a custard slice or three on top would go down very well!0

I agree with PN.
He's 50, not 5.
He doesn't want a fuss (I said the same for my 60th - no surprise party, no banners, no balloons) and had a really nice day.
If you make a fuss of him - nice meal etc, I'm sure a cake from M&S or even one of the big supermarkets will be more than enough.
It's you who've been disappointed over the cake, he doesn't even know about it.
I'd tell him on his birthday, make a joke of it.0 -
Just go to the supermarket, buy a nice choccie cake and put some candles in it. Job done.0
