Depends on the diesel. Older engines (like the 2.0HDI, actually) cope fine with low mileage.
It's the modern electronically controlled EGR and DPF that are the real pains with low miles. That and VG turbochargers which get gunked up.
Old stuff with a basic vacuum controlled EGR which can just be blanked and doesn't need mapping out, with no DPF, will happily do short trips without a problem. Sure, it's still not *good* for them, but they will cope with it.0 -
I had the 2 litre HDI in my 308 estate. Didn't have the flywheel problem as automatic but probably the best engine I've had for years. The particulate filter relies on additive (Eloys fluid) being automatically injected into your fuel tank to help it regenerate, this injection occurs every time you open the filler cap so always run your tank down before filling up or you'll have to have the additive tank refilled too often, 80,000 to 100,000 miles should be the norm. Taxation class will be considerably higher than the 1.6 HDI, I was paying £285 ? a couple of years ago but my average consumption was always in the region of 45 MPG.0
