Is he a sole trader or a ltd company? If you can sue the guy who sold it to you personally then the chances of getting your money back are slightly better.

I still don't rate them highly, I'm willing to bet he has done this kind of thing before and is good at avoiding paying his debts.

Good then at least you can name him personally. It's probably worth spending £4 and checking to see if he has any outstanding ccjs. You can check at https://www.trustonline.org.uk/

If he has a string of unpaid ccjs then it's unlikely you will get anything. If he hasn't you might get lucky and be able to enforce it. Personally for £4K I would risk it if it didn't look hopeless but ultimately it's your call to make.

As I said earlier it really is your call. Only you can decide if you want to risk throwing good money after bad.

Personally I would as trashing his credit file might hurt him a bit.

Proceed on the assumption you won't get any money back is my advice. That might make the way forward as little clearer for you.

Not saying you are the guilty party.

But you are in this situation because you failed to research the sellers feedback and failed to inspect the car properly.
  • thanks for everyone's replies. I have decided to take it all the way. Hopefully it might make this to e rag wake up.:j
